A funny Fossochromis Rostratus story

I think that the only reason mine did was the fact that I'd been chasing them around for several minutes trying to net them out so I could put them in my 180 Gal. tank. I think that they were getting tired and scared and finally had had enough and they decided to do it to get away from me and my net.

Yeah my 9 inch fossie does this also. Just that I would not encourage this behavior as I had a 10 inch fossie freak one time and after he went into the sand he darted right into the glass. He died 2 days later. Sand diving is a natural behavior for these guys which is why they are my favorite Af4rican cichlid.

Be carefull rearranging rockwork in the tank with these guys I lost a 8 incher this way. I took out all the rockwork to catch another fish and when I put it back in I could not find him. I took all the rock back out and it was too late he was under the gravel under a big piece of base lace rock.

I recently bought a 180 gallon aquarium. Well about a week ago I was netting out my cichlids in my 75 gallon tank to put in my 180. I have 6 Rostratus's and they are just pups, about 3 inches long, not tiny but a LOOOONNNNGGG way from being adults thats for sure. Anyway when I would try to net them they did something that made me wonder if I was drunk even though I wasn't drinking. As I tried to net them, if they got away they would bury themselves completely under the gravel the next time I tried to get them. At first I started to wonder if I was ready for the funny farm but when all of them started to do this I realised that it must be normal behavior for them. I read an article on them the next day that stated that they do indeed bury themselves in the sand or gravel when threatened. I mean they were completely covered. I had to literally dig them out of the gravel with my hand. Pretty neat thing to see though.
i am getting 20 fry's from one my friends, they do that in the wiled also if they are about get eaten, he showed me the first time i laughing my @ss off...they do look very nice and get very big...
