As an A Song of Ice and Fire fan, I mortified with the direction of the show.

As a Game of Thrones fan, the past few episodes were freaking AWESOME!!!1!!one!

I have tried numerous times to read the novels but I just can't get into them.

If you've watched the show first, the first three books are very boring because they follow along closely. However, the fourth and fifth books are where things get interesting; they pick up where the fifth season began, but are MUCH more in depth. The first three books more or less each got a season. Season five is covering all of books four, five and some of the as yet incompletely released book six.

Think about how much you're missing as a show-only fan. Though as a standalone, it's still really enjoyable.

Hey Chicxulub, would you say if you followed only the TV series, you could skip the first 3 books and start with the 4th book and on? coz if thats the case, i may just pick up reading the books, even though i'm not a big fan of reading...

That is what I got from his post and I might try that.I love reading but have never been a big fan of fantasy novels.

I'd say that's fair. There may be a few tertiary characters that you're unfamiliar with, but you'll know what's going on.

It is critical to keep in mind that A Feast for Crows (book 4) and A Dance with Dragons (book 5) are actually two halves of the same book. If you like the show, you might be able to skip AFFC and be able to really enjoy ADwD (though you'll definitely miss some by doing so). They could have gotten through season six just from the stuff in those two books IMHO.
