this happend last year and i think i will share.when i bought my first oscar a few years back, knowing oscars need 55 gallons each i got a 55 gallon tank. 3 months later i got a new oscar, they started to fight so instead of nuying a 110 6 ft tank, i got a 90 gallon. sevral peacefull months went buy and there was no fighting, when they got around 8 inchs(sexual maturity) things got bloody fast, i came home one day to find them with locked jaws. my red oscar was bleeding and the other one was missing a eye. i returend the oscar missing a eye to big als and got a pleco, it has been 7 months sence then and my red oscar is growing fast and is healthy. there are 3 good resons oscars need 55 gallons each
1: so they have enough room for terortory
2:they each need 55 gallons of water to dielot waste when fully growen
3: so they have enough room to grow and be healthy

I would say the need atleast a 75g. to be happy. (55g. are not very wide.........)
Glad to see you got rid of, (seperated), them so they didn't kill each other.
I can't believe so much harm was done in one day, sorry to hear that.....

I agree.

Right now I have two Oscars in a 55 gallon (upgrading to a 400 gallon soon) and they get along great. They have small arguments every now and then but nothing serious. They have been together since they were babies almost a year ago now. They sleep together and rearrange their sleeping corner together. I haven't seen any eggs so I am guessing they are both male. I am probably just lucky they get along.

wow - i don't feel bad now for the oscar i heard that got his tail fin kicked nightly by a jardini aro, once the aro got big enough...

i have 2 8" oscars in a tank now, havent had any problems... but maybe thats because they are male AND female.... they just like to get it on... lol

It was late and I was the only one in the department (My partner in crime had wondered off) so I decide to head over to pets and look at all the fish ... I like the puffers the most ..... My partner was standing at the tanks with a customer with about a 5 inch Oscar in a bag ... i said, how big of a tank? 29g ...... /palmface ....... I sighed on the inside and explained that it wasn’t a very good choice at all but none the less he didn’t care and walked off. I couldn’t really take the bag from him because my company doesn’t really look kindly on anything other than making money.

^^^:thumbsdow boo i hate that

I had two oscars that had been together since less than two inches. At 8-9 inch range they started pit digging and rock cleaning. Came home one day to find lip locking had progressed to one removing most of the scales from the other. That one subsequently died from injuries and the other got banished to the pond with the pacu. Now they are best buddies.
