Hello all! Great forum here. I just found it this weekend and was quite excited to share and find more information for my own little monster. For years now I have been housing a Paco named Waffle (My kids named him). He started out small enough to fit in the palm of my hand and over five years or so has grown to about 24". I really enjoyed seeing his personality grow over the years and he was getting to the point where I could pet him which I've read is something Pacu sometimes let their owners do. He started out in a 49g bow front, then moved him to a 75g Marineland and as of Feb last year moved to a 200g I picked up at a local fish store when it closed down. It didn't have a top so Waffle managed to jump out within about a month so I had some nice thick glass tops made for the tank. After that he hit it a couple times but didn't come out again...

Recently my wife and I have been contemplating what to do with him next because it was getting a little tight in there to us but it seems Waffle decided that for himself because he jumped out while were out of town this weekend! Ironically the same time I found this forum. It was some serious force because he hit the lid with enough to knock it and all the stuff on it out of the way and then must have wiggled out. When we got home he was laying on the floor. A horrible way to go for a fish and I miss him terribly after raising him all these years. I buried him out by a lake I go to so he can be be near a nice open lake as he rests. Sorry for the sob story but I just wanted to share it.

After looking through the forum a bit I've seen some amazing setups and would like to thank you all for sharing them. I'm using this time to redesign the tank a little then decide what I want to put in there. My question at this point is where do you guys get these large driftwood pieces you have? Everything at the LFS is either too small for my tank or ungodly expensive. Thanks everyone

I'm sorry.

I know how it is. A few years ago, I lost a fish with so much personality, he would finger chase, glass bang, let me pet him and was always so excited to see me, he would swim laps around his tank. It is heartbreaking. Now, I keep fish that don't give a damn about me...LOL

As for the DW, I get mine from ebay. It IS expensive but I couldn't find anywhere else that had the pieces I was looking for.

Sorry to hear your story. What a bummer! :( My wife got teary eyed when one of our 2-year old rainbows died...I can't imagine how she'd feel losing such a big fish that you have grown attached to.

As for driftwood, if you are ok with manzanita, manzanita.com has great packs of aquarium wood for a pretty darn reasonable price, if you ask me. I got a box of 12-14 pieces, each between 20-30", for something around $60 shipped. Very reasonable. They also have large pieces that they sell by the lot, with a photo showing each piece. The only thing is that their wood is not presoaked, so you'll need to soak it for several weeks to waterlog it. Otherwise it will float in your tank.

Good luck with your redesign, and be sure to post pics!
