a Hemichromis elongatus or frempongi which one to pick

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hahaha ok.

i think that shoul work. they can hold their own against the butti. add some bichirs and it should be a very nice combo!

what is the craze with birchirs and another question do you think i can get away with a large tank with both Hemichromis elongatus and frempongi , and the butti and also whats the craze with bichirs

Hemi's hate anything that looks remotely like them :(

IME, aggression wise, it's been Fasciatus > Elongatus > Frempongi, with fasciatus being quite a bit worse than either elongatus or frempongi, which were quite similar.

I agree! I just think a couple bichirs would look good in that tank! But two pairs is a bad idea. One pair and the butti is ok.

what else can these jewels be keep with

IME they do well with some of the rougher mid-sized neotropicals in a large enough tank (~125g). Salvini, loisellei, freddies, some of the tougher pike cichlids have all worked well for me. They generally leave most bottom dwellers alone (though my fasciatus loved to beat on my poor synodontis), so bichirs I'm sure would work, plecs as well. I've noticed they have a hatred for fast, shiny, silvery fish and mine took no time to pick off some alestes sp. I had tried with them. Mbuna work well too, but only the rougher ones (chipokae, auratus, lombardoi, etc).

but a breeding pair would not work with anything huh

Breeding Frempongi/Elongatus might work in a 180g+ tank if you're careful with arranging territories. Fasciatus I wouldn't try in anything smaller than 300+.
