Hi Folks! I've just signed up at this site and this is my first post! I would like to greet you all first on the occasion of X'mas and new year!

I am from countryside, Nepal, I am a quite beginner in fish keeping, albeit when I was staying in a Buddhist monastery I was having an open fish tank. But now I am staying in the rural area. I want to make a fish tank for the poor children who have never seen TV! Any way, I want to make 4m X 1m X 1m fish tank in open courtyard which will be walled by stones and bricks from three sides and the front side will be glassed! So, would you help me to choose the glass and filters etceteras? The weather in that place is not like in Kathmandu, only in January for few days, the temperature falls down because of sever cold (cold wave) and rest of years the temperature ranges from 20 to 38 degree Celsius. Is there the cheapest and easiest way to filter water of the tank? How if I make three chambers underneath of the tank and filter of water through these chambers which will be filled with coals, sands and foams and up-pumped into the tank? Thanks!

Sounds like you have the idea down. Can you draw up some pictures/designs to help us out?

i think it would be better to have the filter on the side raised above the main tank. the pump would push water in to it and it would then over flow back in to the main tank.
that would be easier to service too, eventually you would want to rinse your media.

the less drilling of the glass the better

if you go in the diy section i think there are glass calculators to calculate the thickness of glass needed.
