Hi all, my MGXB sustained what looked to be a standard scratch on his scale except that it was percularly round. It didn't heal or get worse for 3 - 4 months. While I was away for a month, leaving him in the fairly capable hands of my Fiancé, she sent in a pic in which the scratch appeared to have turned into a hole. Just got back seen that the hole has got bigger and there seems to be a similarly round section missing from s scale below. Not seen this before. Is it part of the natural ware and tare cycle of their scales or is there something more serious going on?

I don't think this is natural wear and tear... Never seen this

Looks like something burrowed in it. Would just keep an eye on it or pull the scale. But I think leaving it alone would be good as well and no harm to ur fish.

Could be some kind of parasite eating its scale. I've never seen anything like it. If it's gets bigger more then likely its some sore or parasite. Doesn't look like a chip.

It looks like a parasite, I would pull the scale out incase it is a parasite,, it's a simple procedure,

Clean water good and good filtration is allways the best cure, but sometimes it's not enough, If you do choose to pull scale, I have done work on my Arowana successfuly if you need any advice let me know

In general chipping of scales is a disease and need treatment.

My suggestion, Just observe the movements of fish very closely. I feel his pectorial fin is touching that particular scale, and mildly another scale below, causing this. If that is the case nothing to worry. This might not be happening every time, and only while doing a particular maneuver, so watch the movement very closely and see the possibility of fins touching these scales. I can see that the end of his pectorial fins is very sharp.

If it is anything else, then need to have the proper care or treatment.

BTW - nicely colored XB there!

Appreciate all the feedback, thanks. Now that I'm back I'll monitor closely and change 20% water every other day. Have done 50%, added salt and temp is 30+. I think I've seen another very small spot forming on his opposite side so I'm leaning towards a parasitical/bacterial issue. Will post another update pic soon and anymore feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Okay sounds like you got a plan,, keep that temperature above 30 and keep up the water changes,, if you not going to pull the scale you need to think about starting a treatment asap ,,
