Completely depends on the distance of the star from us. Not to mention you are underestimating the powers of the VLA (very large array) Chandra, Spitzer, and lastly but not leastly The Hubble. We are sending 40 or so Hubble strength telescopes between Mars and Jupiter in the very near future. They will combine to form the largest telescope EVER and we will see 100's of times better throughout the galaxy...That and the high definition moon mission are what to look forward to ;)

What's your estiment for that time span? the very near future in space is anywhere from 100 to 1,000,000 years.
