A little terrified new ray owner

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you ever so much for pointing me at this site the tanks are still really steap for my budget but perhaps workable. Which of these two tanks would be more suitable for my motoro?

130 Gal. Sq 48 x 48 x 13
240 Gal Long 96 x 24 x 25

The more gal is good but it seems that the 48 would be a better width size but maybe not enough water?

Also any idea on how much shipping on something like that runs?

Thanks again for everyone's help!

now i've had a few too many tonight, but this is my opinion. I say F the naysayers. if you want this thing bad enough you wil have it. if you are a good person, you will provide for it. id say the 130 would be good for awhile, but you'd need something with more water eventually(but we're talking 2 years down the line). the 240 is too thin. there are alot of people that say no to alot of things on this site, and they are right 90% of the time. i say you stick it out. get rid of the other tanks, the motoro will be more rewarding. or keep them all and put your time money and effort into the 130. if i lived near there i would help you out. not all of us have the means to keep the truly interesting fish that are promoted on this site. (peacock bass, rays, big catfish). so sometimes i feel a little left out when the big fish snobs say "dont do that." i say, keep the thing, forget what they say, and when the time comes (which will be in about 6 months) put your money into a bigger tank and make the motoro the focus of it. you will be happy, the ray will be happy, and so will everybody rooting for ya to keep it. money may be tight, but if you look hard enough and are willing to put in the effort, you will find a good deal. i hope your next post will say "i got a 130 gal. tank and the ray is healthy". stick with it...

im gonna have one more beer then pass out. god bless all of ya

I know that glass cages has tours/shows if you find one close to you they can take the tank to the show and you can pick it up..it’s cheaper..But I would recommend looking around even at yard sells. You still have sometime so for more research and save your money. Keep your eye’s open “buy/sell” ..GL

Very interesting post..
I like to things ..when people are truly honest ..and when people are truly
intoxicated
you my friend have both..

haha, thank you, but i know if one of the big dogs on this site sees that, i'll be in trouble with mfk. this is the best fish website period in my opinion, i just disagree with some of the people here and their attitudes towards us lowly 125 gal. tank owners... and im shatted so im running my mouth a bit... good thing profanity isnt allowed.

I am just looking around right now to get an idea of how much a tank would cost me in the case I don't find a better deal. Also I don't want to put it off until the last minute and not have the cash. Money is defiantly tight I am single with a nice fat debt my ex-boyfriend left me. But if I plan now and start saving a little each month I think I can get a bigger tank in 6 months or so. The tank cost is workable the thing that I fear will prove difficult is all of the accessories I will need (heater, filter, lights ect)

I do have to say that I am lucky in the fact that this all started with my roommate. He had the first 10g fish tank and when I went to the pet store to get dog food he dragged me through the fish section. I went home with the 20g set up. It has no progressed to this 200g fun. He keeps claiming that if I bring anything bigger home he will have me committed to AA....Aquatic Anonymous, but deep down I know he likes it just as much as I do.

By the way Alexander is doing very well, eating a ton and swimming around happily. It appears that he has already gained some weight. He LOVES the bubble curtain. He pushes them around, lays on them and swims in the bubbles. For some reason he really likes to sit on top of it and let the bubbles come out his top gills, it is really weird looking!

Couple more pictures.....had to take the gravel out of his tank yesterday because it seemed to be bothering him (little pink on bottom) I will be going to get some sand tomorrow.

your ex-boyfriend sounds like a stand-up guy. what a piece of poop (I am still watching my language in my hungover state). well welcome to the land of fish obsessed people. you'll fit right in.

i have been setting up a new ray tank too. if you want to set a 200+ gallon tank up with subtrate, decor, filter, lights, and all that your total will be in the $2,000 range. and for glass cages to ship a tank its like 200+ dollars i would reccomend picking it up way cheaper. here is the link to there stops http://www.glasscages.com/?sAction=Deliv hope it helps. btw if you set up a tank and make a stand and dont get any decorations or anything like that you could keep your total on the smaller side and if i were you i would buy the biggest cage you can(big enough to house a full grown morto) that way you wont have to upgrade in a couple years.
good luck and i hope you can keep your ray
hurray 100th post

Yea I was looking at that page last night, unfortunatly they are on the other side of the country from me. I live in Portland Oregon. So the Las Vegas stop I think is about as close as they come to me. I would love to run out and buy a 1000g tank but I think I will have to start out smaller and work my way up over the years. I am 24 years old so I am rather optimistic that my financial situation will improve greatly over the next 5 years or so. Maybe I will get myself that 1000g tank when I graduate from college!:grinyes:
