A LONG overdue Ackie photo shoot

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great looking cage, but I don't really see a basking spot.. What sort of temperatures do they have to bask at?

They look really cool! How large do they get?

Nice set up and very nice monitors. Little on the fat side though.

Thanks and yes they're fatter than usual. Each had 2 F/T rat pups about an a hour before I snapped these pics.

Thanks! :D

cute little guys

They're even more cute during feeding time!

Wow that enclosure is stunning. Looks like something straight out of a zoo :p great looking monitors. Been looking into getting a blue tree monitor :3

Thanks, that means a lot. I try to keep things on the natural side if I can. Tree montiors are my next species I'd love to keep. But it's Green Trees for me. I've loved that species since I was a little kid.

Thank you. This subspecies gets about 2 feet but my longest one is a few inches shy of that.

Didn't mean to skip you Sean. Yes, there are 3 basking spots in that cage. 2 bulbs and one heat element. The basking spots are roughly 95 F, 125 F, and 140 F.

Alright, just checking. Great cage man, have you thought about trying live plants? I've seen it done with ackies..

I would LOVE to use some live plants. I tried it once before when they were younger but they ended up getting torn apart. Have you heard of any good plant suggestions that work with them?

Fantastic encosures and ackies!
I had the impression that they used more the floor than the high, but it´s nice to see them in the higher shelves.

As regards the plants, I would suggest pothos (scindapsum). I have been using them for years with several species of snakes (mostly Morelia) and they survive.
Monitors aren´t snakes, of course, but I think with the ackies, you could try some pots hanging from the ceiling of the enclosures (one in each corner). It would look great with the leaves hanging towards the floor. As long as the pot itself is "ackie safe", the leaves would come and go without issues to the plant

I know of one cage with ackies which has pothos in it. I have some Chinese Evergreens and a Dwarf Umbrella tree waiting for if my plans ever happen.. They're nice and sturdy plants, you could try them too.
