A myth or true

Fish aren't exactly what you would call smart, but they can learn simple things. Usually involving food.

If you feed your fish in the same part of the tank each day, they will go there looking for food. They have remembered the location of the food from yesterday. If they had a 3 sec memory they would blunder around the tank at random each morning looking for food.

Likewise my plecos each have a favourite cave - they know where it is, and who's it is. When they want to hide they all swim back to their own spots, which they must have remembered. Otherwise there would be a fishy version of musical chairs after each feeding time as they tried to work out who lives where. :nilly:

Likewise if I move an ornament around the tank the same pleco usually finds it again, it's recognised it's home even though it's in a different location.

Cheers

100% fake. I trained my angelfish to come up to the top whenever I open the lid. They come up even when I don't have food. They hide when anyone else comes in the room but me. I think my goldfish had a good memory, too. Whenever I walked into the room, they begged me for food. Either that, or they all happened to be swimming in the same direction.
