A new member of MFK asking 4 tips

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you guys for all of your help! You guys are quick!
I'll definitely post some pics but I'm just picking up the tank, filter, and heater today. Also, I've been referred to a chemical that is supposed to make the tank fish-safe in 24 hrs.
As far as diet goes, I am currently feeding them "Hikari Cichlid Gold" and "Cichlid Attack" pellets.
What is a good live treat for them, what kind of fish, lizards, or whatever?

worms....red wigglers or night crawlers

Wow what a tank with those terrors in it. Something I always dreamt about and here it is! Simply stunning. Back to subject the post about the filament barbs as dithers great choice. They are fast as hell not that common look great espially when breeding. Check them out google mascara barbs or barbus filamentosa.

Hey, it's me again! I got my 90 gal saturday!!
tank = $249.99
2x 24" strip lights = $29.99 each
glass top = $52.97
Fluval 405 filter = $199.99
Fluval e300 heater = $69.97
total = $678.79

It took me until 2:00am sun morning to set it all up.
I took the driftwood and a 1gal bucket full of gravel from my old tank and put it in the 90 and also got some Bio-Spira Freshwater to help seed the helpful bacteria (all tips that i picked up from MFK).
the fluval e300 heater now reads 74 degrees F and is sloooowly climbing (started from about 52 degrees out of the hose at 12:30am sun).

I currently lack a bubbler due to low budget but i can borrow $ from a friend anyone know about a nice quiet one i should get?
also open for suggestions on what kind/color of gravel.

Thanks again for all of your help, I'm thinking of getting a Geophagus Jurupari and some barbs maybe next paycheck due to advice given here!

Oh, another thought...where is the best place to put my heater? i currently have it 1.5' from the end on the opposite side of the output nozzle of the filter. should it be closer to the nozzle? does it need to be away from the bubbler?

i have minimal agitation from my filter output and nothing else, enough so the water ripples but no noise.
i have my heater next to my filter intake, opposite end to my thermometer and filter output. about 2" from the side glass, parallel with the filter tube.

okay, so i should be fine then. I moved the filter output up for a decent amount of surface rippling with little noise.
The tank is now at 78.5 degrees so the green terrors will see their new home soon!
I'm going to have the temp at 80F if there's a better temp let me know.
I've also decided to go with black gravel which i will probably get on friday.

Pics!!
here are some pics of the tank after G.T.s were introduced
I also picked up 6 Green Tiger Barbs yesterday, seems to be working very well.
again, the gravel and driftwood is from my 30 gal getting black gravel this week.
the tank

Do I have enough surface agitation to not need a bubbler?
also, if anybody could confirm the genders of my G.T.s that would be awesome!!
