A new tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I built the majority of the stand today. Well the rough frame anyway I can't really say majority because doing the finishing work is alway more time consuming than the actual construction. It was pouring rain here most of the day so it was a good day to chill out and get some work done without the wife complaining I was spending more time with my "wood" than her.

I decided to make the stand match the tank, just a few inches taller. So the stand comes in at 30 1/2 inches tall. I don't know why the half just trying to use all of a 92" stud I suppose. The tank is 27" overall so just under 5 feet in total.

At Home Depot here they have this "sico" plywood. I've never heard of it before but it has a nice grain and it's darker than the spruce I've been using up to this point so I think it'll give a nice contrast for the inserts with out being to dark. This stuff is somewhere in the color range of oak but half the price. So I intend to pick up a sheet or two to make the inserts and cabinet doors for the stand.

To answer an earlier question yes I intend to fibreglass. I realize I probably don't need to but I oversized everything a bit to make room for the fibreglass during construction so there's no turning back now.

I really don't know exactly. The inside dimensions are 48" in diameter from flat to flat. The flat sides vary from 19 1/2" to 20 1/2". The water will be 24" deep. I'm guessing in the area of 200 gallons. My math skills suck so if someone wants to figure it out for me I'd appreciate it.

I assumed 20 inch sides, so my number will be slightly higher than the real figure, but I got 45888 cubic inches (198.649350649 gallons). It looks like your maths are spot on!

LOL, for me reaching 200 gallons wasn't math. I just looked at my 50 gallon and tried to guess how many times over it would fit in the new tank. Thanks for doing the "math" for me I appreciate knowing exactly how big it is.

it's a great design and unique compared to just a box shape well done can't wait to see more progress done with it.

so what do you think about making a fish tank using plexi glass please send message

plexiglass would be easy to work with. You can saw it on a bandsaw just like plywood. drill holes in it, whatever. Where someone would get enough of it and find it thick enough is beyond me. It's ridiculously expensive and scratches so easily I can't imagine it being used for a viewing area. Also regular silicone doesn't stick to it all that great.

Ended up getting today off to so I dropped off the wifey at work this morning and swung by the Home Depot for a dozen more 2x4's so I can build the floor for the base today. So far I think I'm into this project for about a hundred dollars of my own money. Other than for a sheet of ply for the base inserts I shouldn't need any more wood.
