So I got my first 20gallon aquarium about 2 months ago. Went through an ordeal of ignorance with my first family of fish (ammonia poisoning...100% water change, untreated tapwater, they all died :() and then started reading up on what it actually takes to run a fish tank. So this time around I've got my tank fully cycled and things have been running smoothly. I've got a 4" (or so) Senegal Bichir, a 1 or 2" rubber lipped pleco, some--started with 6, but I've only seen 4 since I got back from a weekend at the lake:rip--glass shrimp and 2 mystery snails.

On to the meat & potatoes...
I've acquired a 75 gallon tank from my sister-in-law. Its only 38" long, I was looking to get a 48" 55gallon, but FREE is hard to turn down. I'm not too worried about rushing to get it set up since the bichir is still small and isn't growing an inch every day. My idea is to use a sand substrate (Tahitian black moon sand?) with a canister filter, not sure about the sort of decoration I'll have for it. I'd love to do driftwood and rocks with live plants, but I haven't figured all that out yet.

My biggest question right now is which filter to go with. The tank came with an old MarineLand Emperor 400b. Its pretty dirty and I can't tell if its in working order, but I've just figured on buying a new canister and moving right along. Being able to just run the tubes down into the cabinet, have silent operation and a spray-bar across the top is just too appealing to me:drool:. So far I've gotten most of my info from www.fishlore.com, but they don't really have much in the way of canister comparisons (outside of the forum sections, which I can't really get a clear answer from). The only filter they have featured is the Penn-Plaxx Cascade series. I haven't really read anything about them except for the lack of a quick disconnect. The fluvals I've heard are terrible, that you have to replace the o-rings/gaskets every time you switch out the media. Haven't really heard anything specific about anything else.

I'm trying to keep it around 150 or less and I'm leaning towards the cascade, but not for any particular reason. And if there's a cheaper alternative to that sand, I'd take suggestions there as well. My tank has light brown trim on a light brown stand...so I'm not 100% certain that I want to stick with black, but I think it would still look pretty sweet with black sand. The bags I saw at petsmart said they'd suit 20gallons at about 22$ a pop. So logically I'd just have to buy like 4 of those for the 75, thats almost 100$ on sand alone:\

This dragged on a lot worse than I thought it would and I haven't even addressed everything yet:eek:

Anyways hello, thanks for any input and for taking the time out to read my ramblings. I'm new to the aquarium hobby, but its quickly taking over and I'm absolutely loving it.

What exactly is the width of the bigger tank(really just curious)
Yes Tahitan Moon Sand is great I only recommend Sand for polys. A cheaper option is Play Sand you find at Lowes or Home Depot for like $25 for 50lbs....Also I dont recommend Plecos with bichirs they love to eat the slime coat and that makes bichirs prone to infection....Otherwise I'd read the stickies on diet and say do 50% WC once a week Have fun welcome to the addiction

I just ran it through the conversion thing...I guess its only about 70 gallons.

I've heard about the pleco thing with poly's, but so far they stay away from eachother so I'm playing it by ear. The difficult part is that the pleco was my wife's choice...so its her fish. She's already pissed enough that the bichir is requiring so much extra (she somehow didn't realize that it would outgrow the 20gal tank, and she somehow didn't realize that it would seriously limit the types of fish we'd be able to keep in the tank...even though both of those topics came up multiple times at the LFS:screwy:) So telling her that her fish has to go because it'll screw with mine won't exactly be a pleasant experience:\ Hopefully if it does become an issue I'll be able to keep it in the 20gallon and it'll end up being a relatively small pleco, we'll see, thats thats an issue for the future.

I went ahead and filled (about 70%) the 70gallon with water today to see if I couldn't get that emperor filter working, and...I couldn't. It doesn't seem to intake enough water to maintain itself. It does have suction through the intake tube, and it does spit enough water to roll the biowheels, but it slowly drains itself until its gurgling water and the spray bars start to sputter. I've tried completely taking it apart (even taking apart the impeller) for a cleaning to no avail. I can't see where a new impeller (10 bucks) would solve the issue, but maybe it would?

So if anyone has suggestions for a canister filter...that'd be great.

Also, can I buy the canister filter, start cycling the water on an empty tank, and add the substrate and decorations as I get the money? Or is it pretty much pointless to worry about it until I get at least the substrate and bulk of the decoration into the tank?

As far as diet, I had some generic bottom feeder pellets from the last go-round with fish that he seemed to do ok with, but never seemed too excited to eat them. I picked up some freeze-dried blood worms but I only ever saw him eat one of those, and I ended up with a ton of it in my gravel, so I hardly ever drop those in the tank anymore (if they sank faster I think I could have him all over them, but they float for too damn long and he only seems to really go after food right infront of his cave). And now I've got Hikkari sinking carnivore pellets that he seems pretty happy with. Breaking them in half makes them just about the perfect size to still sink where I drop them, and be small enough for him to manage.

I'm rambling again so I'll just end it here.

Thanks for any input you guys give, and I'm open to suggestions as far as setting up this 70 gallon. Right now I'm just figuring a black sand (maybe dark tan) substrate, a piece of driftwood that has a fairly large base on one side of the tank that branches across and up, and a rock formation for caves/hiding spots underneath those branches. Hopefully planted, but I haven't looked into any of that yet. We'll see.

Now I like fishkeepers like you! :grinyes:

You do your homework and don't get an Oscar for a bowl.

You went on the fast track to becoming a MonsterFishKeeper!

What are you planning to put in that 75g besides the bichir?

BTW Welcome to MFK! ;]

Oh, and you can cycle a tank quickly if you just squeeze some used mucky filter cartridges into your new filter. For more info look up "Cycling a tank with beneficial baceria from an established tank".

Oh yeah, I've read all about (and talked to the LFS) about using established filter media to speed up the cycle process.

But, I think for this one, since I have the time and nothing to lose, I want to let it cycle 'naturally' so that I can see the whole process as it happens without any sort of aid from myself. I just want to set up the tank/filter and do nothing other than water tests until it goes through the whole process. That way I can see whats supposed to happen during the cycle, so that in the future when I speed up the process with things like filter media and MicroBacter/SafeStart/whatever I still know whats going on. Not to mention just being curious about how it normally happens.

I haven't really decided what else is going in the 75. I would LOVE to be able to have a thriving population of snails and shrimp that the bichir(s) take care of, but the more I think about the logistics of that, the more I think it just won't happen unless I use the 20gallon strictly to breed snails and then drop them in the 75 for feeding, but I don't think a solid diet of snails would be best for the fish:\

My wife isn't really a big fan of the Poly's, so a species tank is kind of out of the question. Besides...I do sort of want some 'pretty' fish :P. I might look into some less aggressive cichlid species, angelfish...I'm not sure. I think a school of ghost catfish would be pretty cool, but I'm not sure how well they would fare with the poly's. Maybe a knifefish of sorts...glass or african. I think the BGK would outgrow the tank before I can afford what it really needs.

So basically...I don't really know right now:lol I want to have two Poly's, not sure if the second will be another senegal or if I'll go with something else. Beyond that, I'm not sure. I like having the shrimp and snails that i have right now, so I'm going to see if those will survive once the bichir is large enough to really do anything about them. I just really like having oddballs, but not to the point that the tank doesn't make sense, you know? I'd like to have the two poly's and then 5 or 6 other fish, either all the same species or varied that will be a little more active during the day, not get eaten and be a good sight for sore eyes.

Thats actually a 65 gallon which is what I was looking for until my GF bought me a 55. I like the added width to it. Thats awesome that you got it for free and good luck with your new fish =)

Yeah I put the dimensions into the little calculator thing and it came back as 70 gallons. Ah well.

I've got water in it now with a rena xp3 filter. I think I've found a place to buy colorquartz for the substrate, I'm just hoping they have black...Picked up a driftwood centerpiece with some rocks and its been soaking since yesterday. Today I'll hopefully be picking up some eggcrate for the bottom and sand tomorrow.

We ended up deciding to go with 2 bichirs and cichlids (maybe another oddball or two if I can squeeze them in...) and so far have the one senegal and a jack dempsey (both small in the 20 gal right now with a pleco). Not sure what else I'm gonna add though...so many choices. The LFS has been really helpful though, they seem to be on top of their game which is very comforting.

So we'll see how it goes...I just started to see some low levels of ammonia this morning, so it looks like the cycle has begun. I replaced the filter bag/media in the 20 gal yesterday and put the old one near the top of the rena filter (starting to think I should have put it at the bottom below all the ceramic rings) so hopefully that'll help. I just want to get the substrate and driftwood in there before too much further into the cycle. But I guess it'll be another week or so before the driftwood is ready to go:\

I went out today in search of eggcrate, sand possibilities and another senegal, and I came home with all three.

I just got done cleaning and adding the sand to the 65gallon, the new senegal seems to be doing fine in the 20 (he just spent a decent stretch of time trying to get behind the top of my heater...not sure what thats about, but I haven't seen any real aggression between anyone in the tank yet). He's maybe 1/2" to 1" shorter than the other senegal and is CONSIDERABLY lighter; although I think he's about the same shade as the first started out at, does having a black gravel substrate affect their coloration?

I'm boiling the rocks I got yesterday and my driftwood has been soaking since I got it home. I'm hoping to add all that soon (maybe today if I get impatient...) and then hopefully within a week or two I'll be able to start transferring the fish to the new tank :)

(I realize this thread may not be of much interest, but I figure if I post what I'm doing, maybe some of you guys are reading it and will chime in to point out any bad moves I'm making or make any suggestions for things I might be missing...can't hurt right?)
