Amongst the Catfish & Plecos
Tonight I found my big L014 Pleco, Frank the Tank (aka Frankie), dead. I was in tears. I was so sad to have lost my first and beautiful monster. He helped us win "Picture of the Year" from AquariaCentral.com last year as the center piece of our discus tank. He was already a big guy 12 inches tip to tip we we got him a year and a half ago. When I measured him tonight, I found he had grown to 13.5 inches. He's been struggling for the past several months, and nothing I've done has brought him back to full health. I do think the big guy was old.
I had decided at 9:30 at night to make sure the water in my 180/100 system was okay to find that the water was perfect, and yet I could not find my Frankie. I knew immediately he was dead, and sure enough he was floating at the top of the tank. I measured him, put him in a bag, laid him in a box, and reluctantly set him in the trash. I knew I could not handle finding him in my freezer.
This is his album I've had up here at MFK:

However, my night was not all sadness. Tonight I picked up a 385 gallon fiberglass tank/pond. (BTW the gallonage is the inside measurements). We're going to cut out the side and put in a piece of acrylic, build it into a plywood skinned tank, and give out big cats a great new home. It makes me feel better to know that we are moving forward and giving our absolute best to giving these fish the best home they could possibly find.

I guess it was a night of change...

Sorry about Frank...Goodluck with the pond though! ;)

Thanks. I was really attached to that guy. He was what brought us here to MFK. I think the 'pond' is going to help. I think it will remind me that I don't suck at fish keeping, that I really do give my fish better lives than some people give their kids, and that fish like everything else that lives can get old and die. I'm looking forward to the build since it's actually going to be a big plywood tank. My kids will be coming back in the house after several months in the garage. I hate having them out there. They're gonna love their new home.

He was 12" when we got him. Who knows how old he was already. He lived a year and a half more with us, and his appetite has been decreasing for the last few months. He has Malaysian wood, soft water, a pH of 6.6-6.8, a temp of 80, he has been dewormed with praziquantel and metronidazole, and is fed massivore, krill, steam market shrimp and tilapia, bloodworms, and several different types of Hikari pellets. And yet, with all this, he kept losing weight for the last 6 months or so. All the fish with him (including discus, knife fish, gold nuggets plecos, and green phantom plecos) are doing just fine. I have been struggling to get him to eat, but him appetite just kept declining. i have known this was in the works for the last couple months when all my efforts failed, but I still am sad.

my heart goes out to you.... i am sorry for your loss

=( To use my usual speech mannerism that sucks.. Sorry to hear about Franky. I for one can say you are a great fishkeeper! Your info on fire eels has helped me alot these past months to get my guy/guys on the fast track to a hopefully long and large life! the fact you got him so large to begin with, and from what lifestyle. You did your best for him and at the end of the day that is more then alot of people do even for their own families as you said. Keep up the great work!

Sorry for your loss, I know its tough I just lost my 12" male festae :( The emptiness in my gut cannot be described when I go out to the pond and look for him only to remember that he is already dead.
