A noob's 125 gal tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been feeding my fishes with some petsmart brand cichlid pellets and decided to change it to hikari pellets. somehow my jags and jack demspey always spit them out. any advice?

Maybe get smaller pellets or soak them in water before feeding so they're softer and easier to eat. If the jags pair off they'll kill everything in the tank jsyk.

having problems with brown algae. dont have any live plants in the tank. should i put some in?

moved the male convict to another tank as he is beating up all the other fish to the point that my 6" oscar is always near the surface if the water. ever since i moved him, all the other fishes are doing well.

bump on my brown algae removal question. should i use some chemical media like seachem's phosphate remover to reduce the algae? i dont have any live plants to compete with the algae or should i get some?

Brown algae is actually caused by low light and excess nitrates and silicates... It's also very common in new tanks. I dont think I've ever not gotten it in a new setup. Just manually remove it (it's pretty easy) and keep up on water changes. An algae eating pleco might munch on it too.

i got a 7" pleco in the tank that prefers cichlid pellets. he just lies at the bottom but when i pour the pellets in the tank, it swims to the surface and starts eating the pellets. it doesnt do a lot of algae eating.
