a pair of aurantimaculata (12") and company

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
personally , i have not kept maculata as they are extreamly hard to obtain in the uk , they are however another sub-tropical to warm temprate species comming from southern china , so again cooler tank is prefered ,but this fish has established its-self in tropical climates where it has been introduced so probably tolerates a very wide temp range , it is said that maculata is quite aggresive and on par with asiatica , personally i would only keep one , because if you kept three unless all the same sex (which i dont belive there is any way of telling on maculata) there is a real chance even in warmer water that two would pair off and cause mayhem in your tank . or split them up if a pair formed , it is also said that they do not like other snakeheads but i think phulltank housed his with other channa (iam sure he will correct me if iam wrong ) i would wait for phull to chip in here or give him a pm ,as there is only him and i think pascal that have kept theese on the board , and only phull that has mixed it with others

about auranti my plan is to low a temp. ,maybe to soft a water and we will see, any good advice about breeding?

auranti breeding is something that still has very little information for it . is has only been done 2 or 3 times and by the same person .

personally i had not changed my water for around 3months on the auranti tank , then at the weekend i done a large water change nearly 50% (this is unusual for me as i never do more than 25% theese days, but i forgot i was draining out and remembered when i looked up and seen the tank 1/2 empty) i have six aurantis in there , and within 48 hours i had three pairs all mock spawning at the surface ,one at each end of the tank and one bang in the centre, the ones in the centre after the mock spawning started shacking there heads at each other then the male looked as if he was leading the female ,she followed him down to a cave he had previously dug out , and then continued the mock spawning in the cave , now the one peice of information that has got out from the guy who succesfully bred them is a cave is very important for them to breed , so i have quite high hopes for theese two. the only other thing i done was to turn on my seio pumps to move the surface , as they have been off all summer to simulate the summer season in assam,

personally i would try leaving for a long period , large water change with cold water -i trickle this in over a few hours , and add some movment to top of tank , on the two times they have bred it has been in november both times ,this is probably why they use a cave because the rivers start flowing in assam during this time and if they let there eggs float to the surface like other channa they would get swept away . if no luck this year in around april stop any surface flow and let tank warm up naturally with the ambiant temps of summer , this will simulate the stream and rivers drying up in assam as they would in the summer months

wish you luck with them and keep us updated on any activity

news from aurantis:

a pair has choosen a cave today (they sitting there together sometimes) , female digging a hole, getting out the gravel by mouth. Is it a good sign? :)

news from maculata:

I've bought one. nice young

photos soon

very very nice

what snakehead have you got again ? ,if talking micro ,as part of a varied diet i suppose should be ok ,but certainly not for there staple , and would not feed at all to things like dwarfs , mamals and birds are part of a channas diet in the wild ,but only a very small part

if its your aurantis , they prefer fish shrimp prawns ect , personally i would stick to that
