a pair of rainbow cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have one in my 55 with a gt, severum, and some geophagus brasiliensis

Because its only a 40g breeder, I'd only get one of any of the following: Blue Acara, Firemouth, Convict, or Nicarguense. If you get more than one and they pair off, you'll have a wreck in the tank.
I actually have a rainbow in a 125g with a green terror, red terror, texas, motoguense and each of the ones I listed above. However, I must caution that the rainbow was the largest when I put them all together and defended himself well. Now the GT, RT, Texas and Moto are all larger, yet they "respect" the rainbow. It's actually quite amusing that this little cichlid swims wherever he pleases and, as I said, actually respected by the traditionally much tougher cichlids. There is no way I'd recommend this mix unless you pay close, close attention to what's going on in the tank and have other tanks ready for a move.
I am a firm believer that a SA/CA cichlid community can be done. I have done it several times in my 30 years of fishkeeping. The 5 keys, IMO: 1)no pairs 2)feed well and balanced diet (rarely, if ever, feeders) 3)water changes/excellent filtration 4)temp at 76F and 5) and this is where I believe everyone who tries it screws up, raise them together from the smallest size you can possibly acquire, with the less aggressive specimens 3-4 times bigger than the bullies to start. I have kept all of the following together, at one time or another, in a 240g with NO PROBLEMS....Dovii, Jag, Moto, Freddy, Carpinte, Trimac, Oscar, RD, RT, GT, Midas, Texas, Nicky, Firemouth, Convict, Centralia, Rainbow, Blue Acara, Salvini, Chocolate & Vieja.

Sorry, I guess I went from answering the question to a discertation!
