A pair of Salvini cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think duanes nailed it. The tell tale blotch on the dorsal fin is the best female indicator of Salvini. Here's a pic of the best pair of Salvini I once kept. Easy to identify gender.

This is the smaller one that gets picked on “he” finally came out from “his” cave

I originally had a juvenile Jack Dempsey and firemouth with them and they got along fine and then the larger Salvini just turned into a psychopath after a couple weeks and started going after everyone the other two are in a 40 gallon breeder doing just fine, would rehoming the aggressive one allow me to move the other two in with the skittish Salvini? None of the fish are even close to 3 in yet

Like putting the larger Salvini the 40 gallon and moving the other two back in the 75 with the other Salvini cause those three never had any problems and the one Salvini that might be “female” in the 40 alone?

Honestly, given their reputation, the “wimpy” salvini will probably become aggressive when the dominant one is removed. The only thing keeping it in line right now is the dominant salvini. That’s just how they are. You can try it but be prepared to make other arrangements.

Sounds good I have a 90 gallon that currently has a school of 12 Buenos Aires tetras all are around about 3.5-4 in and then just a 14in royal high fin pleco that I’m growing out for a friend of mines 210g if anything I’ll just keep the firemouth and Jack Dempsey in the 75 gallon cause so far they’ve gotten along incredibly well even sharing the same cave at times in the 40 and we’ll see what happens when they grow and put the two Salvinis in separate tanks

I have a 5” Salvini in a 180 gallon tank with 4 Severums, an Oscar, a blood parrot, a firemouth and 7 geophagus tapajos and he hangs out with my yellow severum. I guess they like similar colored fish because they are pretty inseparable. They have their corner under some driftwood and will flare up at all the other fish but the Oscar.

For me my most aggressive fish in this tank was my electric blue acara which I had rehomed. Never heard of an aggressive EBA but this one would fight everyone including the Oscar who was 4x his size at the time. He never hurt the other fish but I was worried he would hurt himself.

You just never know with fish sometimes

Well I decided to move the more aggressive Salvini and then I changed the tank around and added the 2 1/2in firemouth and 1 1/2in jack dempsey back into the 75 and they are all are doing great togethor for the past 3 days and each have their own space for now and the larger Salvini is now by itself in its own 40g and is doing good. Wasn’t originally going to change it after reading some of the input but then the larger Salvini caused a couple of small tears in the fins of the smaller one so I thought it was better. I know eventually a Salvini a jack dempsey and a firemouth can’t share a 75 gallon but I’m happy it’s working for now
