A personable cichlid for my 75 gallon tank.

What about the green severum and a spectibilis (not sure if I'm spelling that correctly). I know they get rather large (10-12 in) and have a large bioload but they seem to be quite personable.

My opinion would be "go big". Get a single large personable cichlid because those cichlids tend to be the meanest with other tankmates. You aren't likely going to find anything as personable as you are hoping that will live peacefully with a sev. Sevs are gentle giants IMO and, in general, are easily bullied.

i would love to do a single giant tank banger but worried anything like that may eat the danios. I chose the sev because I know they won't eat the danios. If you know of any that wouldn't eat them that have all those characteristics please tell me. I will be getting whatever cichlid(s) I decide on small so they will be raised together.

JD, severum, chocolate, nic, firemouth or any Vieja species are too shy to be personable. They can even be skittish if you keep any of them alone. To be personable, the fish has to be moderately aggressive. GT and Oscar are exception in that they are only mildly aggressive, but responsive.

So in short, they're are any then. I would love a GT but it would more than likely eat the danios.

What are some aggressive large personal ones that I could have then (read the rest of the post)

i would be be willing to sell the danios when the cichlid got to big but I have to keep the raphael, pleco, pimelodus , and would PREFER to keep the rainbow shark but don't have to.
I don't have a feeling any of the bottom feeders other than the shark would be viewed as a territory threat to the cichlid.

Sorry, but I would have to disagree with a lot of what you've written here.

I have severums and chocolates and they greet me when I come to the tank every time. I will admit I have never trained any of them to take food from my hand, but I would imagine I would have little trouble doing it. I have seen all the species you listed be very personable and have seen most trained to take food from their owner's hand (firemouths and Nics are the only two above that I have not).

As far as aggression directly equating to how personable a fish is, I have to disagree again. As a whole, I would think Vieja, JDs and Nics are right on par with GTs for aggression. In the case of most JDs and several species of Vieja that I have encountered, they tend to be more aggressive than the average GT, which I personally believe get a bad reputation. Many GTs are usually very shy until 5-6"+ while oscars, chocolates and sevs are personable as small as 2".

A lot of it boils down to personality of the individual for some species. But I will admit that many of the highly aggressive cichlids do make some of the best personable fish.

Wow, getting rid of the danios really opened up some options. Could you suggest any specific amphilophus?

I personally would love to try red isletas. But I haven't owned them so no idea on aggression in regards to the catfish or the shark. But giving everyone a hiding place may curb any homicidal tendencies
