It's cool, I like the idea.
Try using the path tool, though. You can separate the fish (or anything else) from the background, so you don't cut things out like the tail. You can also fade out your filters (in most versions of PS) so it doesn't look so hard on the subject (like where there is noise or choppy edges). The blur tool at 50% or less can be used to soften up the rough edges real nice, too.
The font though, not so fond of it. Maybe picking different colors for the interior and the outer glow, or placing it on the black background rather than under. :\
But it's definitely a real cool idea. And the original is awesome, that's a stunning looking fish!
