you can buy some filter socks at most LFS they work great. Or media socks

wrap a bit of polyester fiber around the opening. "filter floss" i think its called. it looks like pillow stuffing to me. Just a little bit around the opening of the intake tube will catch sand.

prefilter is just anything you use to cover up the filter intake from fine particles. I use old pantyhose and wrap it around the intake. Sponges work well too
