A Poly died..

[Deaths Sting]

today i had my first unexplained death... i was on the couch with my girlfriend and i see out of the corner of my eye the most terrifying thing yet to happen to me in this hobby... i saw one of my Palmas get stuck under the sprayer bar and a have seizure...split second later it was dead..me and my girlfriend buried it in my backyard shortly after the death.

i tested my water and found it not to be perfect but not terrible..

Alkalinity pretty close to zero which is kinda weird.. its usually 25 - 40PPM

on of my theories is that perhaps one of my rays stung the poly, it seems one of my ray's stinger it broken at the end... about 1/8 '' is broken off and the area around it is white.

my other bichirs and rays seem to be healthy and not at risk. i did however do a 40% W/C shorty after i buried my poor little bichir.

Sorry to hear it, it definitely sounds like it could've been the ray, but others including myself have had unexplained deaths and don't own a ray.

have u ever heard of a poly having a seizure before they die? if so is it common in unexplained deaths? i just think its weird that it wen berserk 2 seconds before it died...

I've only had one unexplained death, but I'm betting that the stingray's stinger killed the poor bichir.

Yes that is exactly what happened to an albino sen I had. It might've happened to a congicus I lost back in 07, but I wasn't around when it died, I found it dead when I got home, but there was nothing wrong looking with the fish.

Sorry to hear man....I lost my poly three weeks ago. Also an unexplained death no other tank mates or water complications at all and had been seen eating regularly. Just came home after work and he was sitting on the bottom.
