A Possible Project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just wanted to say that I think what you are doing to help is awesome. Things are looking better already. Please keep us updated on how things go with the dept of fisheries. Oh yeah and nice hat.

Are they open to more food suggestions, because wow, are those fish looking like they could use some.

that is one of the number one things that made me go

the grandpa that was in here yesterday with his grandkids used to run the sturgeon release program for the province for 35 years and we had a good talk. I will be contacting Jennifer on friday to see what has come of their meeting with fisheries, she said she was getting more food choices last night.

Hello all!

Yesterday, my kids came back from an afternoon visit to The Saskatchewan Science Center. They were telling me about the fish tank there. They were telling me how it has 2 sturgeon in it, and my oldest daughter told me that when she asked one of the staff about the tank size the fish were in, she was answered "Well the fish only grow to the size of the tank!"

So today I made a phone call to pass on some thoughts on the error of that statement. I was put in contact with Jennifer Jacobs B. Sc. B. Ed., so I left her a voice mail.

When she returned my phone call I had a short conversation with her and offered to help them out with their tanks. I went for a visit at 4pm and spent about half an hour visiting with her and ended up saying I could help them get their aquatic displays in better shape. I also told her that I would post a thread about this and give her the link.

At present they are in what seems to be a 90-100g 4ft tank 18in wide. Filtration is 2 aquaclear 110 hob. The diet has been frozen bloodworms.

I honestly cannot say what species of sturgeon that is, my first instincts is to say lake or shovelnose. They look they have been confined to a too small tank for a long time and it has distorted their body shape to some extent. The tank in the pics look like a 55 or a 70 really difficult to judge, maybe as small as a 40. They need a larger tank and a sand bottom. I could recommend lots of things but if they are long term captives at least they are getting much of what they need already. Releasing them into the wild would be problematic, totally against the rules really. they might not even be native sturgeon as far as I know. Some black worms would be good for them for sure as well as tiny crayfish and or shrimp. Keep us up to date about how they are doing, i am a sturgeon nut for sure and I like to gather all the info i can about them. I wish I could say more but trying to guess what fish this is or what is wrong or right with it from a distance is really a game of guessing. If they were wild caught in Canada lake Sturgeon would be a good bet as the species. If i was going to keep them long term I'd want a 120 at least with trickle filtration and lots of current.

the tank in the picture is very much a 90-100g I HAVE OVER 150 TANKS IN MY POSSESSION I VERY MUCH KNOW HOW TO MEASURE TANK SIZE AND CONVERT TO GALLONS!!!!!!

please take a look at the whole thread and see the tank rescape I did the other day with the pictures accompanying and as an aside note your last sentance in your post considers a 120g a larger tank NOT

Releasing them into the wild is not problematic nor is it against the rules. These fish were provided to the science center by the dept. of fisheries(they most definitely are native saskatchewan sturgeon) who operates a grow and release program for repopulation of wild stocks and has had said program running for over 30 years. Very much the same as other places in the world. So there are 3 options here we could just leave them in a small tank to die a horrible death, we can get them the proper size tank or WE COULD LET THE AUTHORITIES THE DEPT OF WILDLIFE AND GAMING ie)fisheries decide what they want to do when they come today especially since they are a restricted and protected species.

:screwy:YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, a self confessed and professed sturgeon nut would upgrade from a 90-100g to a 120g for a long term home:screwy: Forgive me for saying this but THANK GOD I am not a sturgeon in your care. The suggested tank replacement that I gave them for an initial example is 7 feet by 4 feet by 18 inchs and I would even recommend bigger such as 10 feet by 5 feet by 2 feet. With said tank running a chiller and lots of current and 02. Here is a pic of my chiller I have at home that I would use on the new tank

Well good for you if that tank is 48" long and 18" wide (like you said) and holds more than 70 gallons or so you have arms like a gorillia. I was just trying to judge the tanks size from the numbers you gave and as I said it's a guessing game.

Again the tank size was aguess, it looked very much .like my own 70 I use as a sump on my 125. The new pics do indeed show a better habitat for the fish.

You go by what your game people say, you are in another country, here where i live the release of captive fish in into he wild is prohibited absolutely. Feel free to dump what ever you want to your local waters.

First off how many gallon is secondary to the foot print of the tank, a tank with a larger foot print will give the fish more swimming room, if you had ever kept sturgeon you would know this. A 4' by 18" tank simply doesn't have enough bottom space no matter how all it is or how many gallons it holds. I like to keep all my fish with surface overflows, trickle filters and sumps. Shallower tanks with a large foot print is better for fish like sturgeon. These fish are already dwarfed, my own 120 gallon tank has 10 square feet of bottom space, the tank they are in has 6 square feet. Few people have access to really large tanks in the 300 to 1000 gallon range. If these are truly lake sturgeon only a public aquarium would have a tank big enough. I think the fish should be in a pond and not a tank.

If you were a sturgeon in my care I'd release you to the alligator pond...

Well ****me for trying to be nice!

FYI-the calculation of volume is not a guessing game!! I will refrain from using the words to describe you that would surely get me banned. How about you use the conversion feature to figure out what 48 inches by 18 inches by 24 inches is and keep your attitude to yourself!!!!!!!!

For your information they don't just dump whatever they want into local waters I find condescention in posts such as yours such a wonderful flavour NOT!!!!

IF YOU HAD BRAINS YOU WOULD REALIZE TAKING THIS ATTITUDE ABOUT THE TANK THEY ARE IN IS NOT MY DOING SO KEEP YOUR BS TO YOURSELF ABOUT THE TANK THEY ARE IN AND HOW YOUR 120G IS SO MUCH BETTER!!!! So my proposed footprint of 7foot by 4 foot by 18 inch does not qualify as a shallow tank with a large footprint. Or the even bigger one I would recommend for the fish. &^%&*()()&%%&*()_) since I can't actually use words symbols will have to suffice dwarfed fish will start to grow when they are given the larger tank and they begin to detoxify. And for your information your 120g is not a tank that a sturgeon belongs in GO AHEAD ASK PEOPLE IF THEY THINK A 120G REGARDLESS OF THE FOOTAGE OF FOOTPRINT IS THE TANK FOR A LONG RANGE HOME FOR A STURGEON!!!!!!

If you were a sturgeon in my care I'd release you to the alligator pond...

It amazes me how people like yourself can come on the scene and have nothing good to say about how a person who is trying to fix a bad situation by making it better is doing anything right. How about you post a picture of your supposed alligator pond

Well ****me for trying to be nice!

YOU SIR ARE A DOUCHEBAG

so I got an email giving me an update of the visit from the ministry of environment visit.

I wont reveal the details of the email but will say I sent back a response telling them that I strongly disagree with what they told me. I did also get on the phone to the ministry of environment expressing my concern with what Jennifer from the science center sent me in her email. Within 5 minutes someone from the ministry of environment phoned me back and we had a discussion. I asked her if she wanted me to read my email I sent to jennifer and then thought heck I will send it to you. So I got her email and forwarded it to her.

HMMMMMM that makes me wonder since my email response is my email, I could share that with you guys !!!! I will take a day or two to see what I think, let me ask anyone want to see my response?

I will say this though. If a public attraction facility such as The Saskatchewan Science Center is going to have live animals and fish on display, the onus is on them to make sure that such displays are as good as they can be and provice top notch care for the animals within them. I may have opened a can of worms with getting involved with this, but, so be it.
