A Present for Granny

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with getting the Oscar a bigger tank, or rehoming him and getting a Sajica. They're very cool little cichlids.

If you decide not to get rid of the oscar, as most people usually do, then no more tankmates whatsoever.

I dont think that a 31"x19"x20" tank is better than a 55 standard at all.

Neither is sufficient for an Oscar, especially if bi-weekly 30-50% water changes will not be done. Thats a tiny amount of space for the waste & uneaten food to be broken down into.

Theres been no mention of how much or how often water is changed nor filtration, which might be drip for all we know or the feeding routine which might only be 3-4 large pellets a day which creates next to no waste. Heck might even be 2 massivore pellets. It's not like Oscars get 19" long 20" tall - the dimensions he's got are pretty close to 1/2 of a 125 long minus 2" in depth - this is NOT the same as the other ppl with 2 Oscars in a 12"x48" claiming they'll only grow to tank size. Next time your at a fish store check out this tank the available space might suprise you. I was lookin' at 55 and 75 Triagons last nite @ That Fish Place. My woman wants one for a Saltwater set up. I do realize that most ppl askin' Q's have limited exp. and probably can't make this work however I'm pretty sure most of us could if we had to.

The thing that stood out to me was 20-50% water changes and limited space for waste dissapation. They are excellent points that OP should answer and correct if he intends to care for the fish as he/she stated. Good call. Also I wouldn't and didn't recommend the addition of other fish, the original Q, I think that it has already been answered.

"basically gives the Oscar a circle to swim" So a keeper that thinks a jail cell is ok for a fish?

"however proper filtration would be key" Filtration can be upgraded on any tank, whereas volume can't!! So "filtration" isn't the key at all..

IMO obviously...

Most every fish in home aquaria are in a prison cell as we can't duplicate the millions of gallons of water and range that mother nature provides.
I'm also unclear about swimming in circles - do your fish swim at right angles? With proper filtration and constant water flow ie; a 55 gal sump I could keep an adult Oscar alive in a 10 gal tank. I think it would be cruel and unjust as a permenat home, however I've done it in "Hospital and Quarunteine" scenarios on several occassions. Filtration -Manually; changing the appropriate amount of water routinely - Biologically, removing the ammonia By-products,- Mechanically, moving the water across the atmosphere for gas exchange and to provide dissolved oxygen is always Key.

Youre right.

I just have a picture in my head of my Grandmother having an Oscar and even if I was close, wouldnt have the time to do water changes 2x a week for her...and shed probably overfeed because she felt bad for the Oscar because he always "looked hungry".:nilly:

VRWC is right get her a different fish. my oscar would not like that tank

You said that a turning space is good!!, Did you not? No simple space that allows for turning is OK!!! A quarintine tank is different because it's a short term thing, and not a full time jail cell!!!!!

Wait for the Blah Blah Blah that's to come!!!! :)
