dither fish are fish that will swim around the tank actively and are not shy. Mainly used to help get a shy fish to actually swim around the tank if it hides all the time.

Dither fish aka Target fish are meant to be faster and more agile than the predatory larger fish, and can subsequently avoid being eaten. Some examples would be Giant Danios, Silver Dollars, and Tiger Barbs

I had tiger barbs as dithers with my O and RD. for about a week.

IME, cons make pretty good dithers with larger cichlids.

Yeah, I have heard that Tiger Barbs are crummy dithers until they are full grown. I also think dithers should be used to make timid fish more comfortable and active rather than an addition to a tank where they are only going to give a large fish something to chase. But this is subject to alot of debate.

I don't think dithers are necessary for Red Devils. They don't seem that shy.

Dithers can also be used just to add more movement to your tank, or to give your aggressive cichlid something to chase rather than fellow cichlids. If your RD is alone and not shy, he probably doesn't need any dithers and will end up terrorizing them.

swordtails work good
