I have stock lights over my tank, and they seem to wash everything out and make my fish look pretty ugly. i was wondering what kind of lights would make my driftwood, plants, and more importantly, my fish, look better.printed on the side of the bulbs is this:

Eclipse
Natural Daylight
F15T8 18"
Made in Thailand for Marineland
47P Hg

can anybody recommend some lights that will enhance the color of my fish?

should be okay now.. let me know..

Thanks a bunch Liz!

i really don't know why, but every time i tried to start this particular thread, which was over a dozen times, it would not work. but i could start a test thread.

i dunno, its frustrating.

anyway, back on topic lol.....

I'm interested in what others will say. I need to get some new bulbs. I ran 10,000k bulbs for a while and thought they made the tank look much better than the Home Depot junkers I got in there right now. I also tried a bulb called trichromatic but thought it gave everything a bit of green tint. So far I have liked the 10,000k's the best.

what are some examples of good 10,000K lights? someone on another forum recommended 10,000K lights too but didn't mention any in specific.

K is kelvin which is the "color temperature" of the light

generally:

6700K bulbs are yellowish (I am not a fan)
8000K bulbs are pink
10,000K bulbs are white
18000K bulbs are white with a hint of blue.

my favorite standard florescent is the Hagen Powerglo (18,000K) it is similar to the Aquaglo above, but it is much brighter.

I would go with these, but them I am biased because I use them on all my tanks :)

to help give you an idea of what these bulbs look like, here is my 150g with double Hagen Powerglo bulbs: white with a hint of blue:

yea the same guy that recommended the aqua glo's also recommended power glo. he said power glo would give me more color, and aqua glo would give me a brighter tank.

you seem very confident in your power glo's so they must be pretty decent bulbs!

power glo and aqua glo are the two lights i've been looking at buying, just wondering which would enhance the color of my fish better. I have pumpkinseeds, bluegills, and redbreast sunfish, the general colors in my tank are electric blue, yellow, orange olive, iridescent violet, and black.

thanks 12volt, thats very helpful. so was your breakdown of °K! i knew it stood for kelvins but i always thought kelvins were a measure of temperature (like in chemistry), i didn't know they could be applied to the color of light.

i think im going to go with powerglo then. seems like they are a good all around bulb and they are certainly better than what i have :D
