The land of the pine
I have a 60 gallon tank with a black crappie and i would like to put a common pleco in. i am worrying about it sucking on my crappie scince crappie have flat, tall sides. Does anyone know if it will?

i seen extra large plecos kill fish before like above's. if its small then i doubt it would but it could stress the crappie out enough to kill it if it harasses it and causes stress.

To be honest, if its algae control deal with it yourself... my pleco poops so much more than it cleans its not even worth the effort... i've been infact trying to get rid of my pleco now for months but no one wants it and no shop wants to take it...

Not to mention, it seems that after a certain size they cut back a bit on eating algae and will go in search for food scraps left by other fish... at least thats what my pleco does...

To be very honest, any fish that "cleans" is also going to contribute to the problem with their waste... so really the only thing is to tackle the problem thats causing the algae in the first place...

For example, is your tank close to a window with a lot of direct sunlight? are you possibly over-feeding? Is there left over food in the tank? Are you maybe not doing enough water changes? Maybe you need some live plants to out compete with the algae...

Coz when i started out as a fish keeper i thought having something to "clean" the algae would be great, only to realize later on that there is no real quick fix to the problem since you have to tackle the problem at the root of the cause... Honestly, the only reason i have my current pleco was coz a friend of mine bought two and gave one to me... otherwise, i would never add a pleco to one of my tanks unless i was actually into plecos...

Oh and last but not least, even with an algae eating fish, they won't clear up all the spots, so at the end of the day, you will still need to manually get at the algae for a really clean tank...

Plecos are one of my favorites kinds of fish, and to be honest, I don't really suggest one for your situation. I feel like bristle nose or rubberlips are the best small Plecos for eating algae, but as you said, your crappie may view them as food especially when their young. Commons get too big and after a certain size, produce way more waste compared to the amount of algae they eat. I suggest you just scrub it off the glass yourself. Or you can try your luck with a bristle nose or 2.

Good luck :)
