I have 2 dovii's and have had them for about 7 mos....this is the thing....the biggest one I have is about 6 inches and the other one is half its size....the big one is very shy...every time i walk into the room he/she hides....now the smaller one is more active....but the big one is holding it hostage....every time the little one comes out the big one goes after it...the big one has eaten the tail off the small one....my question is do they ever come out of this shy stage?.....AND will the tail of the other dovii grow back?....thnx in advance

Mine were shy for a few months but eventually came out of their shell, maybe more hiding places or evan some dither fish might help ( but i would expect a dovii would kill them lol ) how far back was the tail biten off ? some pics of the damage might help ppl decide on the future of the fish, can it still swim ok ???

the small one still gets around, no problem....but the tail is pretty much down to the nub....all i have is a crappy camera phone...i will try and get pics and post em

First off what size tank are we talking about? You can rarely keep 2 dovii in the same tank regardless unless you have a pair that are spawning. Regardless you need to remove the smaller one thats getting beaten up because it will only get worse. I also hope you realize the commitment you have made by keeping such a large predator. As far as coming out of its shell once you remove the smaller one try taking out all the decor so he has nowhere to hide. Then on a daily basis spend about an hour in front of the tank....His terroritory will soon extend outside the tank and he will start being more aggressive towards anything that moves outside his tank. At that time you will have what we call a glassbanger and IMO there is nothing in the hobby that compares to a large dovii smacking the glass. GoodLuck

I don't agree with this advice... To each his own but I think the best thing you can do for any fish is create a comfort zone, not take it away. A secure fish is a happy fish is a fish you will see acting/behaving the way it should. In time any dovii will be the master of its domain.

Just my .02

If the smaller fish's tail has been eaten down to the caudal peduncle...no. If the rays of the caudal fin are gone...no. Other than that...it's a maybe depending on how severe. You need to remove that fish and quarantine it. The biggest problem you will have there is the possibility of an infection.

Depending on the size of the tank, you could add a target fish. How big is the tank?

I agree with carpediem. No need to remove all of the ornaments in the tank. The fish sounds as if it is having a problem with the second Dovii. It should adjust over time. If you want to keep both fish, divide the tank.

First off I said "TRY" taking out all the decor...............Everyone i know who had a shy large cichlid tried this and it works almost everytime If he doesn't want a glassbanger then he can make his tank look like a ****ing playground but from what i got from his post it sounds like he want's what most all of us want out of our large cichlids.....A glassbanger.....and thats my .02 biaaatch

Take a pill...

Everyone was respectful in their disagreement, don't get your panties in a bunch. If you can't deal with someone refuting your advice, don't give it. You know what they say about opinions and a--holes... Judging from your response, I'd say you're very familiar with the latter, try getting used to the former.

I'm in no way upset by your disagreement rookie.............But first off have you ever owned a dovii.............probably not. Talking about making sure the fish is comfortable in its enviroment what kind of pussy bs is that. This is MONSTERFISHKEEPERS....Hell the most respective members on this thread all keep barebottom tanks with little to no decor. Until you own a large dovii male don't come in here with you ignorance arguing with someone who has experience with these large predators. Have a nice day and keep up the waterchanges on your 29g..........boy

p.s. your theories for girly discus don't apply for monsters...............

LOL

I'll tell you what... You go ahead and continue to give your sorry excuse for advice on "glassbangers" and I'll continue to get paid for my "pussy bs", ok? :grinno: I don't know who you are, nor do I care but I would bet, judging from your poor grammar and lack of discernable respect for anything, that I've been in the hobby longer than you've been out of the womb.

Best of luck to you. Tool...
