A question for the experienced DOVII owners

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dam you guys are acting like your in middle school just give your advice. This is a forum for that not a forum to argue who is correct and who is incorrect, Both of you may have had your techniques work for your fish but remember each one is different so this guy may need to try different things until he gets the right fit for his fish

I think this trhead has gone to crap:ROFL: It really is like little kids now. Hey REC do you like professional sports? I wonder if you ever say what they should do? I have never kept a Dovii personally but I have kept many other large predatory Cichlids. Does this disqualify me from saying that IN MY OPINION I think decorations would please a fish. People on here always make the comparison of people living in a closet when fish are in small tanks. Well how would you like to live in a 20'x20' room with a window to a giants living room(heh very odd analogy :screwy: ) With nothing in there for you to interact with. I bet you'd be pissed off too though after living in there for long enough:ROFL: No offense meant but let people have their opinions without calling them ****** and thinking you are such a bada$$ cause you have a Dovii. THESE ARE OPINIONS:)

All this for little ole me? .....but on a serious note the fish tail probably wont grow back as it has been gone for almost 7 mos.....and I'm not even going to comment on what size tank I have them in......I will be the first to admit I have made the mistake ALL OF YOU probably did when you first started out.....I was not aware of the size of the tanks that I would need to house the MONSTERS I have....I knew they got big but DAMN 180 GALLONS?....hell I live in a 720 sq ft apartment!!!...currently I have ........
2 dovii
2 flowerhorns(mating pair)
1 red devil
1 clown knife
a tank full of chiclids

And before ya'll try to tear me a new one I do have 4 tanks(and a 18 gallon bucket?), but none of them over a 55.....and of course i keep everybody seperate except the clown knife and the africans chiclids(and the dovii's)....I am in the process of upgrading all my tanks to AT LEAST 75 GALLONS...this **** is getting expensive....I wish I had found the forums before I did all that impulse buying......NO WONDER my fish are so agressive....NO WONDER the growth rate on my fish have suddenly stopped........anybody in houston got tanks for sale?:irked:

I apologize if i offended you by saying biaatch......... I just think its funny when someone says my .02  I was just joking around.... But either way Discus boy is the one that started talking **** by telling me not to get my panties in a bunch so i reacted and i apologize if i offended anyone but for Discus boy he can kiss my ass... I'm all for having a decorated tank i think it makes a tank look better and more natural but for shy dovii's having no decor does wonders for getting them out of the shyness so i was just telling the member who started the thread if he wants to speed up the process that having no decor would help.

Try CRAIGSLIST.COM

Most dovii are passive towards humans in the beginning. Some agree with having comfort zones for them and eventually they come out of their shell, whereas others have forced them to be in the open as Rec mentioned and this worked for them. Jeff Rapps told me once to place the tank high so they are looking down at you. To each his own.

IMHO, it's tail isn't going to grow back after being repeatedly & severly damaged.
The smaller needs to go bye bye, euthanise/adopt/eat... Somewhere/something.

Some fish are shy, some will never be overly aggressive...
But not likely with Dovii.
I'd recommend a median between spartan and lavish decor, give it one spot where it can chill out when needed. As it matures and claims the tank it should come out of it's funk.

If you can't provide atleast a minimally sized aprppriate tank for the Dovii, then get rid of'em.
Female needs 125gal MINIMUM, prefer 150+
Male needs 180gal MINIMUM, prefer 240+

Those are honest recommendations for minimums.

I'm not exerienced with Dovii, but I'm well acquainted with large cichlids and other fish, take my advice for what you will.
Just my $0.02

Yo Rec/Carpediem...
Take a :chillpill:
I find your demeanors, childish name calling and belittlement of one another user to be very distasteful :irked:
Try acting like a adults that are able to debate/defend their ideas with intelligence, not with kneejerk middle school trash talking.

You both trash yourselves enough with your own words.

I know this site is lightly moderated, but moderate yourselves...
You'll get more respect.

I've just started keeping doviis in less than a year. One died since move into another tank with a larger male dovii killing it overnight.
From my personal experience and from what I had done, Ive kept my solo dovii tank with no decorations, but just gravel. And it does wonders to shy/skittish doviis. I've used to have a 3" dovii that was attacking the glass at this small size and another bigger 5" male dovii also the same attitude. What I had done is get your hand or face (whichever works) close to the tank, and when the dovii comes closer move back slowly. I do routine about few minutes a day and within a few days the dovii will start ramming the glass to attack you.

Just a note: I could see, some doviis are just shy/skittish in nature and might take longer for it to come out from its shell and keeping decorations IMO will just make the transition take longer.

BTW: Ive tried this trick to jaguars at juvenile stage and it does not work. But, my 12" male jaguar will attack you through the glass, but the smaller ones wont till they hit certain size (I guess?)

Wow holic it looks like we do agree on something........lol.....and i couldn't agree more on removing the decor helps the process along. And for the guy talking shibby about being distasteful I could give 2 sheers of crap what you think about me or if i've earned your respect. I keep monster fish and I have a monster attitude so **** off. No one gives a damn what you think about what was said between me and Discus so if you don't have anything to say about the original post ZIP IT................YOU RAT........
