A quick game of frogger in the 750.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not much for feeding live but it's interesting to see the fish react. Rays are looking good. Always love seeing dorado as well.

what insight did you get from the university? if you dont mind me asking?

Citrobacter Freundii, Pantoea Agglomerans, and Aeromonas Sobria found in the brain. (3 different bacteria)

Monogenes found in the gills.

I'm thinking that Prazi could have significantly helped this IF my rays immune systems weren't constantly fighting to excrete all the stuff in my water that their osmoregulatory systems have no idea what to do with. The water is too hard, plain and simple, the rays can't process all the extra crap in it so they can't fight off things that a healthy ray in ideal conditions would have no problem over coming.

Plan of attack is to treat for the worms that may have caused the wounds allowing the bacteria in. Then treat for the bacteria. Then going to shoot for 100-150 (conductivity) by using RO to dilute tank water then will mix to achieve this # for water changes. Then nuke the water with a pair of 110 watt UVs.

I'm not much for feeding live either, but lots of research leads me to believe frogs to be one of the best foods you can feed a wolf.

My wolf has never been a super aggressive eater, so just trying some different stuff while the rays are adjusting to pellets, cause he's hating them. (Ken's fish pellets)

Good info, sounds like your getting some accurate answers finally! Seems like you were right about the extremely hard water being the main underlying issue all along. May not have been killing them but it triggered the chain of events.

Do you think those trematodes are likely present in high numbers in the other rays as well?
Awesome 3 stage plan of attack. The UV should help a lot with reducing the concentration by killing the free floaters (I'd check with Ken but 90,000 μWs/cm2 I think might be the ballpark for kill rate).

Real happy for you Al great news.

That lemon fin barb is beautiful lol. Actually noticed him first when i watched the video. I am going to get 3 of those soon as the 10, 11, 12th peace keepers in my atf tank. Oustanding rays as well

Thanks Reed. I'm not even remotely familiar with these diseases. That's why I contacted Mr. Webber.

IF you can offer any advice, I sure would appreciate it.

I've always said I got in way over my head with rays. I can handle the building the system part, but as we discussed, I'm pretty crappy with the Biology/scientific stuff. The university tried some meds on the bacteria they found and recommended 2 meds, both of which are found in Maracyn plus. IF any of the old school guys here remember Nic, I believe this was one of his meds of choice. Unfortunately they no longer sell it by the gallon so treating 2K worth of tanks 3 times isn't going to be cheap :( But then again what about this hobby is??? lol

I've already contacted Ken regarding the UVs but he's not familiar with TMC brand, so I have to take some measurements when they get here so he can run them on his program. I did months and months of UV research and I'm convinced by all the reviews I've read that these seem to be pretty nice UVs for the money. The units themselves aren't expensive at all compared to other brands, bulbs are cheap and made by GE so should be easy to obtain down the road, and the ballasts are supposed to last. Obviously these are NOT my first choice, as that would go to Wlim, but given my financial situation they were the best I could afford.

As far as other rays being infected, I just assume they all are. They will all be treated. I've been Prazi'ing the crap out of the big tank. 4 weeks in and will be finishing up this week. Start the Maracyn at the end of the week, and that should buy me a week or so to get the UVs ready.

The rays on the smaller system (600 gallons total) don't show near the color or appetite fluctuation as the girl I lost did, but I think breeding attempts put the stress factor through the roof on the big tank. The little system also has an 80 watt UV installed on it.

I'll be very happy once I can enjoy happy, colorful, breeding rays..... Just wish I would have been able to take care of all this a long time ago. Should have just went with my gut instead of searching for the reasurement that I thought I needed in order to proceed. I always thought the water was too hard but since no one ever agreed I just kept overlooking it. Should have known when I discovered Shawn was using RO, cause the water up in MN is very similar to what we have down here.

I like them too!!! The big scales are way more appealing to me then say a tinfoil barb. I tried Tins over and over again and the rays always get them. Dithers might not be near as nice to look at as the preds are but without them pred communities don't seem to work real well.... :(

I would love to see a thread on the upgrades to your filter room...

+1 on the filter room, btw those airator discs are sick

I use a Pondmaster AP 100 just for this system, there's 6 disks in the tank and I think there was close to 20 in the reactors. The disks in the tank are the best I've found yet, they are sintered glass disks from Ken's fish. The ones in the reactor are all the crap ones I've tried and hated cause they float or plug or don't diffuse evenly.

I'll do a whole filter room rebuild thread once it's up and running. Been taking pics along the way, but I've been trying to get it done all summer and keep hitting snag after snag. I'm trying a new means of mechanical filtration that I think could be a huge change for all of us with monster fish. Reedmaster16 turned me on to the concept of radial flow separators and they seem like they may be the best thing to happen to mechanical filtration since the sock.
