I have an emperor 400 for my 29 gallon aquarium which has a single 5 inch goldfish, and I've tried pretty everything except buying a new impeller-my impeller piece is in perfect shape, and I can only find them online which has the problem of shipping price. It does a great job keeping the tank clean, but yeah....anyone know a good quiet filter that I can use?

Aquaclear > Marineland when it comes to noise

In my experience aqua clear filters can be very noisy, though rthey are my favorite HOB. If you want silence Eheim ecco 2232 is the way to go it is kind of expensive though

Thanks...its just annoying how irritating this thing is, like I don't get how everyone else seems to be fine with dozens of fish tanks and their filters. It just sucks because I love this hobby but the filter noises I just can't stand.

Most any filter when new is going to be pretty quiet. Besides junk in the filter, the noise mostly comes from a worn impeller or impeller housing as the filter ages. Long term, the quietest filters I have used have been the AquaClear HOB series and Rena XP canister series. The filters I consider to be noisy after some use are the Whisper series (Whisper 30-60) and Magnum 350 canister. Also, canister filters are going to be noisy if you don't prime them correctly.

The Aquaclear line of HOB filters have a solid reputation and the cartridges are readily available. To me, they are the best filters for the money.

Good luck!
