A really stupid question sorry

The word "bichir" has Arabic origins (after the nomadic tribes of North Africa) and was pronounced "bee-sheer" by the French ichthyologist who first discovered and described Polypterus bichir. However, IME, most people in the U.S. pronounce it "biker" because we don't want to sound French.

Thanks Anne for the full explanation.So thats probably the reason I thought there was another r in there the few times Ive heard it said it was pronouceed that way and Im sure Ive seen it spelled that way.

I dont like it when people say biker...I mean Honestly, Bikers are big hairy old guys with chains who wear leather and ride harleys. Unless you have a 6 foot tank, I dont believe you have a biker...i think bitc.h-er sounds better.

that's how i pronounce the genus (with the second P as silent).

i didnt know that delhezi is actually del-hez-eye and that weeksii is week-see-eye. Thanks for that info, Anne.

thats why i dont say biker, imagine not knowing what a bichir is and someone at your lfs saying that they have a biker in their tank. but im sill sticking with bickar.
