A rescue? NOOOO........!

The Hi-Fin is still with us, and actually I'd say it looks a bit better; the vague cloudiness of the tail fin seems lessened. Colours seem a bit more contrasty and "brighter".

As far as eating goes, well...not sure how to describe it. When food is introduced, the fish immediately becomes active...but doesn't seem to eat any. In fact, if a food item drifts down right in front of it, it can swim right over the thing without hesitation. But finally today, I saw it going over the surface of the driftwood much as a pleco or other algae eater would. It seemed to pay special attention to the tufts of Black Beard Algae with which I am "blessed" :uhoh:. Can't really say that I could see any sign of the stuff being eaten; perhaps the algae hosts some especially tasty variety of biofilm?

The fish has those great big puppy dog eyes, and can clearly see me in front of the tank, but it completely ignores a drifting or stationary food item.

Ivan's fish is no more active than mine, and I have convinced him to add some driftwood with algae to his tank, but he also has not seen it eat. His fish is housed with three goldfish much bigger than it is, so it has competition...and it really isn't competing. My fish's Swordtail tankmates are all a bit smaller than it is, so not at all threatening, and I think that is helping.

Interesting little fish, for sure. I'm feeling more optimistic about its chances today than I was only a couple days back. :)

Looking better, to my eye at least. Cloudy fins cleared up, not as skinny, colours brighter and more contrasty. The driftwood and tank walls show signs of something removing algae and there are no other suspects. And I have finally, on a couple of occasions, seem it ingest and swallow small food items. I am cautiously optimistic...1000001479.jpg1000001473.jpg

No firm plans; had no intention of bringing anything home at all. Most of his goldfish came from my pond, I sure didn't want any of 'em back! :)

What little I have read about these guys seems to indicate that they aren't crazy fast growers. Hopefully I have a couple years before I need to worry about his future. If he makes it he will go into the 360 this fall with the goldfish. Next summer? Who knows?

Right now I'm still awaiting that warm fuzzy feeling. Currently still experiencing the cool, smooth, reptilian feeling...:)

Interesting they look like cool fish. I’ve been considering one for my pond once it has finished construction. I’ll most likely stick with koi tho.

Ah must keep trying. Maybe with patience that cold blooded reptilian shall transform into a warm fuzzy feeling everyone hopes for lol

Is your pond outdoors? Where are you located? I seem to recall seeing a thread somewhere that indicated these fish survive under a layer of ice...somewhere in the New England states, I believe?

I've been threatening to dig a larger, deeper pond in my yard; something deep enough not to freeze down to the bottom during a Manitoba winter. I'd need something around 5 to 6 feet at minimum...but I refuse to rush those quasi-plans simply for a fish rescued on a whim from a local backyard pond. :)

As for the other comment...I dunno. I like reptiles. :)

Yeah it’ll be out doors. It’s 11 ft by 6ft and 4 feet deep so if it gets to 4-5 feet it could be a bit cramped. In Colorado close to the Denver area so we get a decent amount of snow but probably not nearly as much as the New England area.

How deep is yours now? I dug my hand and 4 feet was a pita so if you can get yours to 5 or 6 feet that would be impressive.

Well if you like reptiles and you get that cold feeling maybe rescuing fish is for you and you just haven’t realized it yet lol
