A small upgrade.

Awesome setup! Love the filtration! I saw that the tank is 10'x4' but how tall is it? Looks to be taller than 24".

In regards to the bead filters, how will you backwash them? From what I have read, you need to backwash for several minutes to get all the poop out of them. Since the pump on the larger filter pushes 125 gallons per minute and is fed from you sump, aren't you going to run out of water to backwash within just one minute?

I love the idea of not having to clean filter socks and just backwashing these bead filters, but I was under the impression that you wouldn't be able to run one off of a sump because you wouldn't have enough water to backwash the media and get it clean.

Have you had to backwash yet? If so, were you able to get the media clean before running out of water?

the small filter is runs off the sump. 3500 gph. it takes me between 100-200 gals to backwash it depending on how dirty it is. plenty of water in the sumps to backwash that one. the larger filter runs off the tank in a direct loop. it takes about 200-400 gallons of water to backwash that depending on how dirty it is. i backwash them 2x's a week. sometimes one if ive been feeding lightly and am lazy.

also, these are not bead filters in the traditional sense. check out seagatefilters.com and look for the 125 fine media.

not have to wash filter socks and use pythons, etc.... is the only way id ever keep large fish.

Very cool.

Do you have to backwash twice per week because they get clogged up or do you do that as overkill just to keep the water perfect?

if i dont backwash often the pH starts to drop because of the huge bioload. if i could find a simple and effective way to buffer the pH i could backwash MUCH less often. there are literally hundreds of lbs of fish and rays in that tank!
