A smart purchase

Haven't used one in 30 years and they aren't that accurate, especially after you just bought one that's been on the shelf for a year. Just be smart and don't overstock your tank, use good filtration, don't overfeed and do routine water changes. I guess it's ok for a noob to check and learn different cycles

It doesnt make someone a "noob" to want to know how their parameters are. A piece of food can get trapped under a decoration and cause some trouble and go undetected unless you can test your water.

Theres no reason not to get one, Ive winged it for years but the precision and efficiency they provide are worth using. A lot of people get intimidated by the test kit because they see lfs personnel running all tests at once, which isnt necessary to do. I test for nitrates regularly, nitrites and ammonia infrequently, ph and hardness rarely. I keep a jar of test strips around when Im really busy and just want to check somehow. Theyre innacurate but are useful in between stricter tests in my opinion. If there was a nitrate bump I'd catch it, maybe it would read + - 10 but Im not looking for absolute precision, just a quick just in case check.
