Hey I'm heading up to college and hopefully bringing a 10g with,i know its small but i was thinking of stocking with a betta and 8 pygmy cories with a few assassin snails. It has sand,a small hob filter and a small sponge filter, and a few plants. Does the stocking seem okay? Granted not a monster fish question but i would appreciate any input.

pygmies are great fish.cram a lot of plants in there and they'll be happy. mine like to sit on the leaves of my sword plant.

Sounds great! You may have to obstruct the overflowing water from the HOB filter if the current is too strong for the betta. That's what I did with one of my 10g tanks in my dorm when I was in school.

Sounds like a great setup to me! The pygmy cories are more sensitive than your average cories, so make sure you stuff the tank with plants and give it a few months to mature before you add them. I've known a few people who added them shortly after the tank was cycled only to see massive losses in their population.

One other thought: if you stuff it with enough plants that can handle the bioload I would get rid of the HOB. They tend to just blow betta around. A sponge filter will be able to take care of the bioload in that tank.

Cool the tank is fully cycled its been running 6 years now, as for the hob everything is fine with the betta, he's a plakat, the only fish i don't have is the cories but i will soon!

Oh haha! I always assume that people want the pretty long-finned bettas (even though I'm more partial to plakats). You're right. A plakat will be just fine with an HOB. Would love to see some pictures when the tank is set up!

Are you staying in a dorm? Are fish tanks permitted? Have a roommate? Probably best to get your feet under you before you introduce a tank...

Matt
