A Thread for River

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think a nuchal hump helps to give the deep bodied look.
Without other cichlids to compete for dominance it's unlikely your female will show a hump.
My females were in a group of 5 so they all grew nuchal humps.I think this contributes to the shape you are after.
These fish below were around 18 months old at the time of this photo.

I'm not sure how old River is, but I got her last December and she's easily tripled in size (total mass, not length) since then.

If she doesn't get the tall body that's fine, she's obviously not going anywhere either way. :D

She looks as good as any other female I've seen. I think she will be a stunner anyway

I've had Oliver for 5 1/2 months now. He was 2" when I got him so a rough guess would be he is 8 months old.
He is wild caught too, if that makes a difference.

I like the tall body look too. I think his fins help give him that look.

I'd assume him to be a fair bit younger than River then. I have no clue about where River is from and no idea of her lineage unfortunately. :(

I'd assume her to just be a 'run of the mill' captive bred GT... But a darn beautiful one, if I do say so myself :D

He's adorable! Does he have a name? :D

Also quick question for everyone, I currently have River on an almost white substrate and my ex wants to swap it out for something darker.. Has anyone kept them on dark substrate? What does it do to their colours? I think she looks great on the lighter substrate and don't really want her looking washed out because of a change in substrate. :)

thanks. he doesnt have a name. i should consider one.
from my experience their colors intensify if they have a darker background and substrate aginst a warm white light that is placed closer to the front of the tank. white substrate tends to reflect the light. the reflected light rays and the aquarium lighting cause a diffusion resulting in a more washed out look on the fish.

So her colours should be more vibrant on a darker substrate? That's cool. :)
