My question is if you used purigen in a cycled tank, once it was no longer effective then when you cleaned the filter. You didn't replace or regenerate the resin? Here comes the question would the tank then go through a new tank "cycle"? possibly a spike in Nitrites?

Anyone one have any experience or would like to comment??

well if the purigen is the only media then yes but if its just in there for the hell of it then no :screwy:

Your saying when you pull out your Purigen to recharge it, and dont put anything back in, will it start a new cycle?

Yes exactly say I don't put the purigen back in..tank has a fairly heavy bio load..will there be a gap in which the good bacteria needs to play catch up, resulting in a spike?

Yo Plec,
I'm sure you have some other form of biofiltration, like your substrate in the tank, ceramic rings, scrubbies etc. in your filtration/filter right? All the Purigen is doing is an incredible job of replacing the need for carbon, it has nothing to do w/ your biomechanics (ok maybe adds a bit, but nothing substatial to count/rely on) which of course are responsible for bacterial cycles & all the rest that goes w/ biofiltration. Many of us don't leave carbon/Purigen in all the time, we just use it as we see it's needed then remove it till the need arises again.

Bttm line you should never regard the use of carbon/Purigen as your biofiltration, it's just there as a means to clear your water up a bit i.e. remove tannins, the occasional smell, remove med.'s etc. I use mine (Purigen) maybe a couple x's a mnth for a few days then remove it, no problem, as there shouldn't be. It (Purigen/carbon) is not in any way intended to be used as a significant, constant means of biofiltration ever.

Also for the record, Purigen/carbon has no effect on & doesn't control any part of your ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Hope that makes sense. :) :) :)

bigcichntwisted thanks for the info, I usually use it as a preventative measure when going on a vacation or when I have people staying at my place, my water changing schedule gets interupted. However this last time I just left it in the filters and was going to leave it out when my next filter cleaning takes place.

Regarding your comment on water parameter controls by purigen, here's a quote of their website.

"Purigen™ controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s™ impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It "

So if I read you right Purigen or Carbon it does the same job?
