Are you sure? Not a mormyrids but a close branch relative as they are both from Osteoglossiformes which also includes, arowanas, arapaima, featherback knife and african butterflyfish which are primitive fish. Don't confuse them with Gymnotiformes aka the nakedback knifefish or new world knifefish which are not primitive fish and more closely relative to characiformes, gonorhynchiformes, siluriformes and cypriniformes.

It's technically neither, being as it's in a family and genus of its own. The next level up it shares with the mormyrids, some knifefishes, and arowanas.
