so does this pond foam need to be epoxyied or anything or can it just go in the tank without any additional coatings of any sort

I've used it on my background. It can go right in. I used it to glue my styrofoam/cement bg into the tank. I didn't trust silicone to hold it down.
One thing...don't cut any foam in the tank after there's fish in there. Some foam oozed out in the back where the intakes/heaters are hidden. I broke the pieces off and bubbles came out. Lost a calvus within minutes,and another one got stressed out.
One other thing,if you coat the black great stuff with cement,the foam will contract under the cement coating. Some chemical in the concrete reacts with the foam.
I posted my bg on cichlid forums diy about how I used this black pond foam.
