just wanna know everyone opinions,
do you think arapaima should be banned from trade?
there are many offsprings/arapaima babies being sold in countries specially in Asia, and I doubt the number of people who bought them have enough space to house the fish, yet perhaps less fish would make it to adult size or even live longer.

I would never say any fish should be banned, but instead certain fish should only be brought in by stores upon customers request as a special order...

Since the way i see it is, if a person doesnt see that cute 2-3" RTC swimming in a tank they wont be as likey to impusle buy it...

I think it would be best if there was some kind of restriction, like, only certain retailers should be able to sell.

Even if it does hurt the hobby, were talking about a fish where only a handful of people in the word can properly house.

it doesn't really bug me unless the fish are being wild caught. I agree with the special order thing

A handful? Really?

Think about it. How many people in tropical climates have massive ponds on their land? Hundreds, thousands, millions? Lots of people can house fish this large.

So no, this species should not be banned from the hobby.

You can't stop stupid. Using size logic, we should also ban any fish that due to size issues can't comfortably live out its life in a 10 gallon tank, because at some point some idiot will try (unsuccessfully) to keep a fish in a container that is too small for it. It happens every day in this hobby, and millions of fish die every day because of this single act of ignorance. Those that don't, at some point probably wish that they had. Just think about all the red devils and oscars in the world that spend their entire sad pathetic life in a 30 gallon tank.

There is a reason the expression is "plenty of fish" . A good chunk of these fish being bred in asia are destined for the dinner table, is that any less cruel then an arapaima passing through a few hands/ponds before it dies, all the while being fed and having its water quality looked after? I know we get attached to our specific fish, but unless severely endangered I believe fish are in a way dispensable, just ask yourself how many minnows/fry make it in the wild? Of course I feel bad for them, I just don't believe there is any sense in restricting access to them.

I agree that a fish shouldn't be outright banned just because of its size. They should be a special order item. I agree the impulse factor that most baby Monster's have is large. It's how I got my first RTC, TSN, and RTCxTSN Hybrid.

Even knowledgable store owners I know sell RTC and all sorts of huge fish. I asked him do you ask for tank size and he goes no they usually come back within a year to donate them to me lol

I think many fish such as arapaima would go extinct if it wasn't for the hobby .....it gives people a reason to farm them and keep them going. They have been hunted to near extinction in the wild .... I think it's good that they are still in the hobby...also like said be for people are Ignorant when it comes to keeping animals....ESPECIALLY fish. And there are thousands and thousands of hobbyists who can properly house an arapaima. There is no reason for them to be banned. If your gonna ban a fish due to its size you may as well ban Oscars red devils and many more fish...because just about half are kept in a small 55 gallon which is borderline torture for them.....it's complete nonsense.
