Any info would be great; I believe I have bought this particular type but I do not have any pics to show as of yet. I will pick them up tomorrow and post some asap. I bought 6 and will put them in my 150 for the time being.

A little feedback please!! With all you piranha gurus out there, I would've thought there would be massive amounts of info. I've already checked the stickys but couldn't find any info on them. Going to get them in a couple of hrs or so; so if there are any particular needs of this species please let me know! Thanks folks

you're probably not getting much info because they're not really a piranha, it's a spotted silver dollar. they are related to piranhas, but so are pacus... the care is quite different.

agreed Primarily a herbivore, wild fish browse on submerged vegetation and zooplankton. Provide a large amount of vegetable matter in the diet, including; courgette, cucumber, peas, spring greens and other green vegetables. Commercial foods such as algae wafers, spirulina and vegetable flake are also recommended. Silver dollars will also accept the majority of aquarium foods and will relish such treats as bloodworm and brineshrimp.

Ok I am confused; on pg 10 of the "name that piranha" thread, luckydemon posted a pic of a metynnis maculatus and it was id'ed as such by jp and then confirmed as such by luckydemon. No mention of it being a spotted silver dollar or anything else but a piranha. So which is it, were u guys wrong b4 or wrong now?? I will take some pics tomm; hopefully that will help with the id.

actually if you look at page 12, you'll see that I said something to the effect of, "that's not a piranha. we're only doing 4 genera. pygocentrus, serrasalmus, pygopristis, and pristobrycon."

if you are buying metynnis maculatus, then those are not piranhas, they are sometimes called spotted metynnis or spotted silver dollars.

still a neat fish, a group of them would make a great centerpiece to a tank and you don't need to worry about them eating each other for lunch. i have seen some really nice looking biotope tanks with metynnis sp., chaetostoma sp., ancistrus sp., etc.

Pg 12 does state "only 4 genera...,etc", but no reference to them not being piranha. Right or wrong? Like I said, I will take some pics and hopefully that will clear it up. I am only going by what I read and the pics I have seen. I am no expert by any means. I sent a private mess to demon thanking him for posting the pic of the metynnis maculatus, saying I had just bought 6 of them and was looking for more info. He replied by saying he would like to have a couple, not that they were not piranhas and were silver dollars or whatever they are. Maybe he thought I knew they were not piranha to begin with, I can't say.

Thanks for the info in your response, Joe. I tried to get a pic of one with the camera phone; not enough pixels for a decent one. I did notice some decent pointed teeth on them and some slight red shading on their underbellies. Maybe that will help some...
