For one thing I don't think it is really a pleco. It was more than likely a whiptail cat. They clean up algea just like plecos though i think. I don't really remember much more. Sorry

There are several menbers of the loricadae family (same as the plecos) and a couple members of the asperidae family (banjo cats) that are called whiptail catfish. They are alle lightly armored, long, and flattened catfish that range from 5-15" long as adults, all are peaceful although the larger ones sometimes eat very small fish. Most prefer slightly acid water though there are a couple that prefer slightly brackish water. They are not terribly active and most are easy to breed if provided a pvc pipe or bamboo tube. Standard tropical tank conditions suit them well. They are not competitive feeders so care must be used to make sure that they get there share, sinking pellets with supplements of nori, spirolina, cucumber, green peas, and a few blackworms would do well for their diet. They will also eat live brine shrimp. Pretty cool fish for a non-aggressive community tank.
