About ready to quit

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
glad to hear your still with us. the changes in lights, fish stock, coral stock and equiptment has the potential to throw things of kilter. As you noticed, in most cases things are not sever enough to cause major losses in stock. What I would suggest in the pred tank, is get a list of the fish in the tank on here. Depending on your stock, you can probably drop you salinity and do whats called a hypo treatment. I like hypo salinity because i live by the saying, if you cant test for it, dont add it. I like to leave adding medications etc as a last ditch effort. Ich can be easily treated with careful care and hypo. read up on hypo under the reefkeeper articles. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/sp/index.php

as you read the link, reducing the salinity reduces the life span of the irritans. once those die off in all 3 stages, you will want to keep the salinity low for about 4 weeks to make sure everything is in the clear. I have noticed that commonly after ich, the fish is stressed to the max. I have had several cases were after an ich event, the fish then gets a fungal infection of some kind, so keep an eye out for that. In most cases, if you feed well and lower/raise the salinity slowly, your fish will come out in good shape. Good luck.

I am a newcomer to this saltwater wonder world, and I have just gotten to the end of the tunnel with an ongoing ich/parasite problem for 2 months now, constant 88 degree heat and salt finally beat it out. Still going to keep it up for about another week to be safe though.

Edit: this was a fw tank I was talking about. thats why salt was added lol.
