If they are retics that you are getting then a 30" wide should be fine for a very long time maybe even for life. Just make sure you have the filtration to substain the bio load.
I agree. With retics a 30" is usally fine sure there are some exceptions but besides being small rays they grow slow.

Try doing some tests with your tap water: Age some in a large container for a week and test the ph again. Make sure there is some circulation while you age it, like a pump/powerhead or something. Also test the KH and GH before and after aging.

I will try aging the water- that does sound like a good idea. Will a basic airstone do to keep the water turning?

I shall get the second pump running this evening and keep testing the water. Cheers.

I guess it depends on how much water and how strong the air pump is. If all you're using is an air stone, I wouldn't age too much water at one time. Other opinions?

we see rays quite frequently in the uk i have been to 2 lfs in the last fortnight that sold them.

I didn't know the word "fortnight" was still used in modern English. That's cool.

Anyway, what type of rays are you going to stock?

one juvie reticulata

i'm in southampton and it is only the 3rd time i've seen them available. In 10 years. though, thinknig about it there is one place that has motoro's near portsmouth. I guess i didnt think about it as they were VERY expensive and i didn't have the tank at the time.

I have been looking at the water quality issue and it seems that the water comes out the tap at PH7.8 and the water in the tank is sat at 7.8. I'm having a similar convesation on another forum and so far i have established that one of the many keys, is stability- constant temp, PH and so on. I shall keep an eye on the PH as i am all the other water properties within the tank.

pH of 7.8 is not a problem. Check your KH and GH, higher KH and GH will give you pH stability. Just remember, you will have to monitor ammonia and nitrite levels closely with the pH at 7.8 as their toxicity increases as pH rises.
