Above ground wood pond question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tia, wish I was a carpenter, but alas the only skills I have are my imagination and the internet (especially this site, gave me a bunch of ideas).

Since I live in Hawaii, theres a lot of Japanese and Asian influence here so just by driving around I got some ideas for my pond.

As for the plant, yes it's a purple taro plant..they get quite huge and I must admit that it grows like a weed. I read that you shouldn't realease this plant into the wild or else it will infest the waterways. Here in Hawaii, taro is cheap (I got my plant for about 3 dollars) and I have to trim the darn thing once a month or so. I will have to replant the darn plant soon and it's only three months old. As you can tell from the first pictures, it's grown way too big in it's pot and I am actually considering getting rid of it, except that it provides shade for my goldfish...but thanks for the praise.

That looks sweet, I love it. I gotta get one of those taro plants!!!

I'm thinking of using the Purple Taro, there is also one that is almost black that pops up in the summer from time to time at a couple of nurseries. I have to use it as an annual, but it gives a tropical feel to the pond. I'm also going to try Canna Lillys this summer as well.
Kine - nice job on the filter screen. def. looks asain inspired.

Ciryn;
Hey, another local here!
Actually I heard about Waimanalo after I had already put my pond together, but will definitely check them out one of these days. I live in town, so that's a drive for me to go all the way over to that side of the island.
I bought the 60 gallon liner from Petland. Now I wish I had bought a bigger one, but since this was my first, I wanted to "test the waters".
All I can say is that the Taro grows like a weed and I am constantly amazed at how many runners it sends out and how fast it filled up the pot that I bought it in.
