Absolute Beginner!

Hullo everybody, Sid (23) here from Bombay, India.

I'm an absolute beginner in the aquarium world, currently have a 20 planted gallon tank with Guppies, Platys and Mollys. DON'T LAUGH!!

However, as my income (for now) seems to headed up and I love aquariums, I'm looking to really spruce things up - my next tank should be in the region of ~300 gallons, and I want to get some serious fish in there, starting with a few examples of Megalodoras (LOVE catfish!) or Polypterus

I'm here to absorb... don't want to make mistakes AFTER I've got my new tank. So if I ask dumb questions, bear with me, I'm only trying to learn! :)

Jaeger no one here is going to laugh at you. You're lucky in fact. India has some very nice Monster fish like Bagarius and the Mahseers. You can catchthose and start your own monster fish collection.
 
Good to know, TRUST!

As far as I know, the Masheers are endangered, and not available for home aquaria through legitimate sources. I supposed I'd have to head to the Garhwal region and net one myself! In case anyone is interested though, there's superb Mahseer angling to be had in the Jim Corbett National Park.

I wouldn't mind a Goonch though, and I don't think I should have as big a problem getting hold of one, considering there are rivers near Pune (~200 km from Bombay) that have these fish.

What I've heard about these guys is that they are voracious eaters and really aggressive in mixed company, something I'd like to avoid initially at least!

welcome, I have seen a couple of articles about Indian fish but not really a lot of info. Isn't India a huge, diverse country? My sister-in-law is a Siihk? from Peshwa? somewhere up north and she describes the waters there as verry seasonal.
 
Hi Guppy... yup, India IS a large and VERY diverse country... and your sister-in-law would be a Sikh from Peshawar, which has been in Pakistan since the Partition in 1947. And yes, the waters there are very seasonal, its very close to Afghanistan and completely landlocked.

True about info on Indian fish, the thing is most information on native species is stricly from a zoological viewpoint as those Indians who do have home aquaria tend not to go beyond ornamental fish... most of which are imports/locally bred goldfish/carps

I'm hoping to herald a new Monster Fish age in Indian aquaria! :D
 
Oops, good luck with the fish. I saw an old National Geographic article with guf holding a dip net out of a temple pool that couldn't have been more than 30' on a side, the net was full of reds and yellows, some kind of killiefish I think.
