I woke up this morning and found my Flower Horn dead...
I'm really shocked right not. I did a 40% WC on Saturday. Water params are fine, and I haven't seen any spikes to indicate something could be wrong. The tank has been running at full filtration (2 Marineland HOT Mags & 2 Mag 350 cans) for a couple of weeks now. No excessive algae growth or planaria to indicate there was excess food or waste in the water. The Raphael cats and pleco that were also in the tank are fine. I can't believe I just lost my FH.
He was eating fine yesterday with no signs that anything could be wrong.
I've heard about Flower horns dying suddenly and seemingly without cause, but I always thought that was in smaller fish. He was without a doubt the most interactive fish I've ever kept, passing even the oscars that I use to breed. If this is what people talk about with hybrids and the health problems they can have, I think i'll be shying away from them for a while.
I still can't believe it...

Welcome to the club. I've jumped off the hybrid wagon after I sold my last hybrid. Even with the best water quality and best diet, they still succumb to the most random diseases. FH's these days rarely live past 2 years.. Which IMO is pretty sad.. I have wasted more meds on FH than I have on any other fishes that I've kept. Sorry about your loss though.

Thanks. I wish I had the opportunity to try to treat whatever was wrong, but there were no warning signs. I think the randomness is what has me so shocked.
Like I said, I think I'm done with Hybrids after this experience. He was an awesome fish, and I have nothing against them or those that like to keep them, but I just don't like to deal with sudden and random deaths.

Everybody has lost fish here, some months ago my 3 piranha died on me......I wanted to quit the fishkeeping hobby but FH's kept me into it.

I know it is rather discouraging when you take care of your fish almost by the book and then something "unknown" seems to kill your fish, it is very frustrating I' know it, I've been there. After 3 years of piranha keeping suddenly my 3 beloved caribes and 1 natt died on me with no apparent reason...when dismounting the setup i found out they got poisoned by a rusting piece of metal that was below the tank lamp's hood and formed part of it. I didnt realize of it till it was too late, water condensed inside of the hood and it caused some piece of the lamp to rust (it was plastified but somehow the plastic coverage ceeded out to rust) so the water mixed with rust leaked inside of my tank per months.

It is supposed that FH's have a life span of about 10 years however as they are hybrids what happened to you unfortunately may take place but it doesnt mean that every fh you own is gotta die just like that.

Dont get discouraged and go on.

Cheers.

I'm not discouraged, and I know these sorts of things happen, but in all of my years of keeping fish, rarely have I had anything die that was out of the blue, and the few times I've had a fish pass that I could not figure out what was ailing them it was not as sudden as this. I fed the FH last night at 8pm and he was aggressively eating as always, but then by 8am this morning he was dead.
I think I'll take a break from Flowerhorns for a while.
Maybe I'll look into Trimacs or Lyonsi. Both are fish I've been intersted in and not kept yet. Jags would be another.
We'll see what happens. Thanks.

Jags sounds like the option I would go for...;)

But believe me mate, this **** can happen...if even us, Humans die and sometimes suddenly too why can't it happen to fish???.

Although it may ocurr, I dont think what happened to you is the common tho.

Cheers.

What were you feeding him?
You might want to look into Ur setup a lil more
sounds so crazy...something could of poisoned him....idk more investigation is def needed just to be sure the other fish don't die

No changes in food. He gets either NLS or Hikari Gold pellets several times per day. He ate well during his morning, afternoon and evening feedings. Like I mentioned, all of the water params are good. I've not seen any issues with the water (it's probably the cleanest its ever been since all the filters are up and running and I've added the UV sterilizer).
I did a 60% WC today and I'll keep an eye on all the params moving forward, but I can't see anything wrong with the water.

i hear that UV sterilizers weaken the immune system of fish idk tho.

if you make it up to raleigh anytime soon i've got a nice little orange fader and young red dragon, fader 5" dragon 4" if you want to try again just LmK, $10 is what i paid (at a steal) and you can have either for that just to cover what i spent, sorry for your loss.
