I am curious, does anyone use more than one of the standard foam blocks inside the AC 110, instead of using one foam block, bio-max, and replacing the carbon with some thing else?

Yes. This is the best way to run them for mech filtration.

I agree...I use AC's as my primary mechanical filter....You'll see that all my canisters are filled with crushed coral for Bio....AC's rock...I have been using them on my displays and breeders for almost 5 years....Very strong filters...I never had problems with them...2 sponges on a AC101 does the trick...As long as you have another filter doing bio(duh), you will do fine....:headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

yea i have two sponges and 1 biomax in mine

I am sure it will work with the other sizes of AC's, but I figured I would ask as well. Can I do the same thing for the smaller sizes of AC's not just the 110? Also heres another question, not along the same line. I want to replace my OLD Whispers on my 55 with either two AC 70's or 110's. In my whispers, they have two cartridges and two foam pads, so there really isnt much for bio, but they seem to work just fine. I leave the cartridges in there just to help filter debris out, but I never fill them with carbon. Now if I change to the AC's, would I nessessarily have to add some media in them for bio, or will the surface area of the foam blocks be enough?

It will work for any size of ac.

For the best overall Mechanical filtration, what would you suggest as the best filter? Is there a hands down choice?

I use a HOT magnum for mech filtration with a micron cartridge. This canister hangs on the back, does a great job with mech filtration, and can easily be moved from tank to tank.

Sea Clear 10 micron cartrage with secondary 1 micron polishing pad and a pressure pump...hands down the best mechanical filter on earth. Provided you can afford it that is.....

Agreed, but the HOT magnum is cheaper. If you're going to do a permanent setup, the Ocean Clear is the way to go.
